I checked the various rental websites. For a small car, for May 17-21: Thrifty was charging 279.66 Hertz, 279.20 Avis, 237.60 (but 211.20 if you pay now) Hotwire, 251.00 I decided to bid 30 for an economy, using the link. Priceline allowed me to rebid, so I bid 35. They then countered at 42, which is the same as Hotwire, excluding taxes. Any suggestions?

I would wait a week and try again. When quoting all prices, please use daily rates before taxes and fees.

Please place your bid through a Priceline link at BiddingForTravel.com.

Thank you!

How do you find the rates excluding taxes and fees, without actually booking? When I go onto the car rental sites, they cite all-inclusive prices all the way through the booking page.

Sorry, but they must have changed the way they quote rates.

You were absolutely right.

I was able to get a rate of $31.20/day (excluding fees) at Hotwire at end-April. So I reserved a car, and kept trying on Priceline (using your link) to see if I could get a better rate. It's now two days before the trip, and I still haven't been able to get any bids accepted. I'll make one last try tomorrow, and will tell you how it goes.

I tried today, and failed completely. Priceline kept coming back to me, proposing different "special offers". On one bid, they offered $38 (for a compact). On another, they offered $56 (for a mid-size). So, I'm sticking to my Hotwire rental of a compact at Thrifty for $31.20. Oh, well....
