Priceline recently started a new product, similar to Hotwire, called Express Deals, which is accessed through the orange tab on their retail Hotel screen.  These deals will always cost more than bidding but you can see some of the guaranteed amenities and guest rating on them.  They are not offered as extensively as Hotwire but they are worth checking if a few dollars per night is not real important to you.  Priceline Express Deals should also be listed on the Hotel forums at BiddingForTravel.com and tilepusher will identitfy them on the Hotel List when they are posted so please list all of the displayed amenities and guest feedback rating in your post in addition to the quality rating, dates and purchase amount.

I have just learned that not all Express Deals participate in Name Your Own Price. This was determined by the fact that there is a 5* Express Deal in the New York City Empire State Building zone but 5* isn't offered in Name Your Own Price in that zone.

We just had the first report tonight of Priceline rejecting a bid for less than the Express Deal rate for the same parameters. Actually, it was the second report in a few days by the same person for the same stay.

There is no general discount/upcharge to bidding vs. an Express Deal. We've seen anywhere from a few dollars to a 70% discount on a $160/night Express Deal.  That said, most frequently, the discount when bidding from the Express Deal rate is 5%-10%.  It is extremely important to not rely solely on the Express Deal rate when you are preparing your bid.  You must always check retail rates as we have seen a few instances where the Express Deal rate is higher than the retail rate.

As pointed out by a user today, an advantage of using Express Deals is that you avoid an upgrade for those who don't want to be upgraded. Note, however, that a higher quality level hotel in the same zone may have a lower Priceline rate but that is often obviated by being charged for parking, breakfast, Internet, etc.

We are now receiving some reports that Express Deals are disappearing within 5 or 10 minutes so if you see a good one, please keep that mind.

Be sure to always click through the Express Deal to see if it is actually still available and to read a full description of the amenities displayed. For example, free Internet may actually mean free Internet in public areas and not the guest room.  And bed choice available may not be any choice at all.  I just came across an Express Deal with that listing but when I clicked through, the only option was for one bed.

For anyone interested, I have additional comments about Express Deals in my replies to this request for bidding assistance.

This is a perfect example of why bidding strategies should never be based solely on the Express Deal rate. Checking retail rates is always of paramount importance.
