Permutations are failing

I'm trying to bid for a 3* hotel in the Seattle area on October 24-27. There are 4 zones that do not have hotels rates as high as 3*, so I'm trying to use permutations the increment my bids as follows:

17 - 48
17 3 - 49
17 3 8 - 50
17 3 8 12 - 51
17 3 8 12 16 - 52

17 3 12 - 53
17 3 12 16 - 54

17 8
17 8 12
17 8 12 16

17 12
17 12 16

17 16
17 16 3
17 16 3 8

The gaps indicate where I have run out of zones that I can just add, and so I fully shut down and restart my browser to start a new sequence (going through BFT links each time).

The problem is, after I made the first 5 bids, shut down my browser, and try to start again, Priceline says that "We were not able to process this request since our records indicate you have already made a request for this same trip."

But it's clear that, for example, I had not made a bid for the combination of 3 12 17 zones. And I got the same message when I added 16 to bid on 3 12 16 17 (my goal is 17).

Anyone have any thoughts about why I'm running into this?

But you had made the 3 12 17 bid before. The combination is included in your 4th bid (17 3 8 12). Removing the 8 does not reset your use of the zones ---- adding a previously unused zone re-enables their use.

Then how do you explain the success of bidding the 17 16 and 17 16 3 combinations just 2 (or so) hours later)? By that reasoning, those are bids that "remove" the 8 & 12 zones.

In previous permutation use, completely shutting down and restarting the browser allowed for new, unused combinations that could be built to their maximum.

I can't explain your eventual success without seeing all your bids and the time/date you made them. You state you bid over several days. The most likely explanation is that 24 hours had elapsed since you had burned your zones.

Your bids as listed are simple additive bids for the first 5 bids, and at the conclusion of those bids you then lock yourself out of those zones and their combinations for 24 hours. When you return another day, some of your zones will have been last bid > 24hours ago and will be available. You started with your 5th sequence during your success ---- how long was it from when you'd been rejected after the 5th bid of your 1st sequence?

An actual permutation grid for your 3* bids here would be:

17
17 3
17 8
17 12
17 16
17 3 8
17 3 12
17 3 16
17 8 12
17 8 16
17 12 16
17 3 8 12
17 3 8 16
17 8 12 16
17 3 8 12 16

A new bidding sequence is required for each bid except the last (when 3 can just be added to the 17 8 12 16).

Search "permutation" and you'll find threads explaining true permutation rebidding --- what you're doing is not. That's why your initial bidding "failed", not that it was a glitch or that Priceline just hates you.
