"Hotel Fee" on Priceline - is that new?

Planning on bidding for NYC in a few weeks. Today I was trying a few test bids, and noticed this "Hotel Fee".  Has that always been there?  Not expecting a win with $110, but if I won, there would be another $108 in fees added to the winning amount.  Getting to be unreasonable.  Wonder what the fees would be with a win at $200.
Offer Price Per Room, Per Night: US$ 110.00
Subtotal: US$ 220.00
Taxes and Service Fees: US$ 56.08
Total Room Charges*: US$ 276.08 Apply Coupon
Hotel Fee: US$ 52.00
Total Cost*: US$ 328.08

The only change is that Priceline now tells you what a possible fee is if you get a hotel with an added fee. In the past, you were surprised by that fee after your bid was accepted. And note I said possible. It does not happen 100% of the time. And as always, that fee, when present, is paid directly to the hotel, not charged when you bid.

Sheryl - thanks.

So does that mean that if I bid again for NYC, there may not be a hotel fee?

And even if it shows on Priceline (as it did in this instance), the hotel still may not charge it?  And when I pay it, it is at the hotel, not to Priceline at the time of the win?

Thanks again,
Jim

1. Correct

2. Correct. Like resort fees, it's payable at checkout.

I just got back from Chicago and got hit with a $13.90 hotel fee for "internet and incidentals". I honestly don't remember seeing it on my bid, so then it's quite a surprise when your bid is accepted but at almost $14 over what you intended to pay.

For me this is a game changer with Bidding on Priceline. I had to pay the fee to the hotel directly.

How would you know about this "fee" in advance? I would definitely modify my bid amount. I wonder if the fee is the same whether or not it's a Priceline reservation?

A little bit bitter about this one.

If you didn't incur the fee, call the hotel.
