We stayed at the Tremont House for one night. The hotel is very beautiful - birdcage elevators and tropical palm trees in the lobby. Check in was quick and staff was friendly and helpful. We got the last room on the third floor which required a long walk from the elevators. But once we opened the door, it was breathtaking. The room was huge with very high ceilings and hardwood floors. There were two double four-poster beds and a full size sofa. Room was decorated in a nice black and white tone. There was a stainless steel sink with plenty of space in the other part of the room. The bathroom was clean and nicely designed. There were two bathrobes and a towel warmer rack. Parking by valet only at a rate of $10 a night with in/out privileges. When we returned to the hotel at night, the bed covers were already removed and we found two Godiva chocolates and a good night poem card on the pillow. We were really impressed staying at this hotel.

Stayed at Galvez last Fri/Sat then moved to Tremont on Sun. Both are "historic" Wyndham properties so high-speed internet access for my laptop was a plus. FYI, Tremont Hotel was formerly a 4* PL hotel but was recently downgraded to 3* presumably for opacity. I say that because Tremont was even more gorgeous than Galvez with it's larger, high-ceiling, well appointed rooms located within walking distance of The Strand area (cruise ships, shopping, restaurants, etc.). Tremont's bathroom was larger, included a multi-rack towel warmer. If you're a late arrival, word of warning: everything shut down, including room service, at 10:00pm. We waited until about 9pm to scout the area for a cheeseburger and found everything shutting down so headed back to the hotel for room service cheeseburgers about 9:30pm. Tremont's room service said they only had child cheeseburgers available at that hour although they were quarter pounders so we were very satisfied.

I'd highly recommend staying at either Tremont or Galvez hotels, depending on your purpose to visit Galveston. Galvez is located directly across the street from the beach whereas Tremont is downtown. Tremont doesn't have a pool on-site but does have an agreement with Galvez as a "sister hotel" to use their pool but you would need a car to drive there.

There was plenty of free parking at Galvez but very limited curbside parking at Tremont. Valet is available at both places for $10. We were fortunate enough to land a spot in the street on Sunday which is free parking until 8am Monday.

The Tremont House in Galveston is a very nicely restored, downtown city hotel. We stayed here for one night on 7/30/2012. We were not interested in staying at or on the beach and were very pleased with the selection of this hotel.

The hotel is located near (within walking distance) to the cruise port and to “The Strand” – a popular, several-blocks-long attraction with many (maybe 50) shops, restaurants, and drinking establishments. It is also close by to several museums related to port activities and the railroad.

Pros: nicely furnished room with excellent bathroom, wood floors, comfortable bed, one small restaurant (deli/breakfast) and two bars (one in lobby and one on the top floor), complimentary Internet and Wi-Fi, complimentary shuttle to the beach area and to their “sister” property (Hotel Galvez), bellman services.

Con: No free parking – must use on-street metered parking (in short supply) or pay $17 per day for hotel’s valet parking.

Definitely recommended, if you do not want a beachfront hotel.
