FLL convertible Avis 8/16-8/26, $29 per day

I really wanted a convertible. But the rates I was finding were discouraging. So I waited until the last minute to bid. Even then, Alamo wanted $47/day, Enterprise wanted $59/day, and Avis wanted no less than $85/day. And this doesn't include the taxes, which at FLL are considerable. (In all cases, I checked on the price for a Mustang convertible "or equivalent".) I was now very short on time, and worried that trying to bid for a convertible directly might not work well. So, I took an indirect route. I saw that a premium car was running $23-$35/day at the three companies mentioned above. So, I bid $25/day for a premium car in the hopes that I would be accepted right away, and would be offered an upgrade. Bingo! I was accepted immediately, and offered an upgrade for $4/day. So I got a convertible for $29. I got a great deal, but I'm now wondering whether I followed a silly strategy. Should I have just bid for a convertible directly? Even if bidding indirectly was a great idea, should I have started at a lower rate, considering that Alamo was offering a premium car for $23/day?
