When I first got into my room at this hotel, I didn't think that the place seemed like a 1* hotel. There was a decent sized TV with cable, two fairly comfortable beds, and a little refrigerator. However, after spending a little time in the hotel I see why some might think that this rating is fitting. The airplane noise is deafening. You can look out your window and think that the planes are going to land right on the hotel. I'm not sure if you can avoid this problem if you're staying in Hilo because most (if not all) of the hotels are on Banyan St. which is right by the airport. The walls in the Hilo Seaside are also paper thin. You can hear the TVs in the rooms next to you. This place gets a so-so recommendation from me because I'm a fairly deep sleeper so all the noise didn't bother me too much but for someone who sleeps light I'm not sure if they can stand it.

We stayed recently for 2 nights on a Priceline $50 winning bid.  I wasn't expecting much and had been warned that this place could be awful.

It wasn't (awful) and though certainly not 3-4*, it definitely exceeded my expectation.  We didn't experience airport or other room noise and slept well.

Supposedly Seaside is the only Hawaiian family-owned chain of hotels.  Very friendly staff here.  Parking can be a bit difficult.  Lots were full as well as street parking right in front of the lobby, but staff was helpful in showing us (even accompanying us) where to park around the corner from the hotel.   I was a bit uneasy about parking along the street and out of sight from the hotel entrance, but apparently lots of guests have to do that and it all turned out ok.
