This post is to provide some curious information to our community of travelers seeking discount hotel travel.

In order to make use of frequent flier miles for free airline travel to and from Rome in May, I needed to make a connection through Heathrow which required an overnight stopover.  So I've been casually scanning over the past few weeks the discount websites to get a sense of my hotel options.  The Sofitel London Heathrow is the only 5* hotel in any of the London Airport zones, and so it is the easiest one to identify on any of the "blind" websites.  Last night I saw a 5* hotel deal offered on Hotwire for the night of May 14 for only $120, which is considerably less than what was available anywhere during a search just last week.  (Since I'm flying on BA in and out of LHR Terminal 5, which is where the Sofitel is actually located, this also saves me the additional $15 that I would otherwise spend on the Hotel Hoppa shuttle bus going to and from any of the other hotels near LHR, not to mention the additional time and effort.)

Priceline's only Express Deal for a 5* hotel on that date was $146 (and it was clearly the Sofitel).  The Sofitel's website listed $348 as the lowest price available for that date.  And of the 11 hotel consolidators listed on TripAdvisor, $290 was the lowest available (Priceline + 4 others).  Given all of that information, I decided to give Priceline bidding a try, starting with a lowball bid of $95, and then increasing in $5 increments up to $120 without success.  (At $120, the total cost between the Priceline charge and the Hotwire charge was negligible - less than $2 apart.)  So I went ahead and purchased the $120 Hotwire deal.  (I apologize that I didn't use the BFT link for Hotwire, although I used the BFT link for the failed Priceline bidding.  Since I already had the Hotwire window open - ostensibly just for research - it slipped my mind to close that window and then to re-enter through a BFT link.  I also wanted to jump on the deal before it disappeared.)

Sheryl and others, have you ever seen Hotwire actually undercut Priceline?  In this case, the price difference was a significant amount, which I find astonishing.  Although I've used Hotwire before as a research tool to get a sense of hotel price points, I've always found better deals going through Priceline - without exception.  Until now.  In any event, I thought fellow travelers might find this information interesting and perhaps useful.

Yes, I have seen Hotwire undercut Priceline but it is definitely rare. I have moved your post to the proper forum where there are other examples.

Good evening.  I just wanted to ask you when you bid on the Sofitel, was it in the lhr East zone.  It seems like it should be in the west zone,  but hotwire only listed a 5 star option in the east zone.  Thanks in advance for the info

This purchase was almost a year ago so what was relevant then may no longer be relevant today. That said, what was available on a specific date is not always available on all dates, just as is the case with Priceline.

I've never bid on htowire, so a little hesitant in trying.  Really want the sofitel, and bid on priceline up to $123 or so in the north zone, which in priceline is the only lhr zone with a 5 star.  Now hotwire has a 5 star in that east zone for $120.  Are you aware of any 5 stars besides the sofitel that are in the LHR area?

I don't follow Hotwire except to notice they are almost always more expensive than Priceline, often rate hotels higher than Priceline does and that whatever Hotwire has, Priceline will have for less so my recommendation is that you monitor Priceline Express Deals.

Please place your Priceline/Hotwire bids/purchases through the link in my signature or by clicking the Priceline/Hotwire banners on the right side of the screen. And please keep Priceline in mind for your conventional travel bookings as well.
