I started bidding 5* hotels in Bangkok (for Feb 5) at $57 and went up one dollar per attempt (changing zones each bid and then bidding again the next day) until I got the Pullman Power Hotel in Bangkok at $65 (plus the $19 service fee). I have never heard of the Pullman Hotel and have no idea if it is a 5*. This price is only $3 cheaper than booking this hotel on the hotel web site.

In the past I got Shangra La and Marriott at a good rate.

I don't think Priceline is a reasonable way to book a hotel anymore.

As you can see, this forum is pretty dead. That's probably because you are right- the best deals on hotels in Asia are not through Priceline.

I will disagree with Oriented and say...

Don't be so quick to think that you didn't save money over booking directly with the hotel !

In exchange for the small $19 in PL Service Fee and taxes, you are avoiding a 10% Service Charge and 7% VAT taxes that would have been added on to your room charge at checkout on top of the higher room cost.

Luv to travel2 The Pullman from the website is $87 including taxes. Priceline gets it for $84 including the service fee. Not much of a deal and I don't really think this is a 5* hotel for which I was bidding David

Don't be shut off just because you have never heard of this hotel. It is a delightful place to stay. The food and wine promotions are terrific and the buffets are some of the best in Thailand. You may decide to rebook this hotel after staying here.

I agree whole heartly with David 99 that PL is no longer a good site to book Hotel rooms.  In March, I booked a 4 * Hotel room in
Hk and paid $85 plus all the service fees and taxes.  I got the city view Hotel in Kowllon.  Room is run down and I would rate it 2*.  On top of the run down room, they also want to charge fees for using the pool and Gym.  When I complain to PL, they didn't do anything and just saying it is up to the Hotel and the fact is the Hotel did have pool and gym.

A 4* Hotel charges user fee for pool and gym ?????

Hello Canter,
You are painting with a pretty broad brush here...

I have consistently used PL to book hotel rooms around the globe and saved $1000's of dollars a year in the process. Sure you might get a few that don't meet your expectations,  but you are bargain shopping. Many times you will do well, a handful of times you won't.

For me, the successes FAR outweigh the problem hotels. Just last week, I got a $87 room at the Marriott in Zurich where the going rate ANYWHERE else would have been over $300 per night. They gave me a newly updated room that had new carpeting, new curtains, new bedding and heated tile in the bathroom floor! Would it be any more fair for me to say that PL is a great place to book hotel rooms because of my great experience?

Some people are willing to trade the savings that are possible for an occasional bad deal, I know I am, others are not. That's cool too, you can always use a hundred other websites that you pick the hotel you want at a fixed price, but that doesn't make PL good or bad.

Travel well.

luv2trvl1:

I still use PL for Hotels in N America and sometimes in Europe.  However, for Asia, PL is no longer a good site.  I guess the problem could be Pl isn't the same PL which I started use them almost 8 years ago and did save bunch of money.
