1. Charleston, South Carolina
2. Downtown Charleston only
3. check-in 7/15/15
4. check-out 7/18/15
5. 1 room
6. 4*
7. These daily rates, not incl. taxes, are from the direct websites today and are:
Francis Marion Hotel - Not available
French Quarter Inn  - 336
Mills House Wyndham Grand - 299
Renaissance Charleston - 259 W & T, 339-F
Vendue Inn - 309
The Priceline Express deal is: $163 (seems fair-wonder what hotel?)
8. The source websites for the above rates are from the hotel websites as stated.
9. My free rebid zones are: Charleston Southern University, Folly Beach, Middleton, North Woods Mall, West Charleston.
10. Max bid: $140
11. I have read the Hotel FAQ on this board and checked for updates today and agree to Priceline's rules, specifically that I am bidding for double occupancy (which only means two people per room, and that Priceline reservations are non-cancelable, non-refundable and non-changeable) and that there is no way to increase or decrease my chances of getting a specific hotel.
12. I will be bidding immediately with NO CAVEATS.
13. I will post the results of my bid and updates (where applicable) on the same day, respond to all Administrator/Moderator questions and I will place my bid through the BiddingForTravel link to Priceline in the signature of my posts which requires that I use Priceline.com (US) and no other website for bidding.

If $163 is a fair deal, why is your limit more than 10% less than that based on what it says on the Bidding Assistance Form about your limit?

Right, sorry, I was focused on increased savings rather than the rules. I thought that since the express deal was 163, maybe I should bid less than your 10% rule which would be 147 and maybe not worth the risk of possibly getting a lesser hotel or area for a $16 savings? Is there a way to identify the express deal or should I start a bidding strategy to try to save even more? I would be willing to bid up to 147 if that is what is required and is still a savings over the express deal. Is there any benefit of taking an express deal over a name your own price bid?  My understanding is that express guarantees stars and location, but with bidding you run the risk of possibly getting a lesser area with the free rebids or a lesser star rated hotel...am I right? I would love to get another knockout deal like I did recently with your advice.

You will always get a better deal when bidding. As to your understanding, it is not correct. Based on the rules, which are definitely realistic (note that your savings last night was less than 10% less than the Express Deal), I would recommend that you start at $144 and raise $3 per free re-bid. Based on what we typically see in Charleston in the summer that would be a killer deal.

Your reasoning behind your limit is misplaced. Your limit should be what you intend to pay based on what you would pay if there was no Priceline. I strongly suspect you would either stay outside of Downtown or in a lower quality hotel. If you are just looking for a discount for the same quality hotel as you would otherwise stay, then your real limit is just anything less than the Express Deal. I think the bidding limit is very adequately addressed on the Bidding Assistance Form.

Thank you for the explanation, and you are mostly correct regarding my strategy. However, I would not stay outside Downtown, but perhaps a 3.5 star unless I could Priceline bid or Express a great deal on a 4*. Would you recommend simply booking that 163 express deal? Is there a way to identify the express deal hotel? Do you think I would get the same hotel as the express deal or perhaps a different one or no way to tell?

tilepusher can try to verify the Express Deal if you clearly state that you will buy it and not bid anyway. I strongly recommend bidding as it is highly likely you will get the same hotel but cheaper. See the form to identify Express Deals which is in the same forum as the Bidding Assistance Form.

I now see you have edited all of your posts. This is also clearly addressed on the Bidding Assistance Form. My bidding strategy above, is based on your original post because I do not know what you changed. Please always follow exactly what the form says which is to alleviate problems from happening in the future. My credibility is very important.

I bid as you suggested with 2 free rebids up to $150 and was rejected. I am not sure if I should go further or try to identify the Express deal. I could go a little higher or try again tomorrow. Meanwhile, waiting for your advice I am reading the identify express deal forum.
(The only edits to my prior posts I made were to spelling or grammar. There was no reply at the time I did that I don't believe. I will be more careful from hereon.)
