Wanted to be actually downtown, not get the Crowne Plaza Resort (not very customer-friendly of Priceline not to recognize the difference between walkable and not), so restricted to 4* options. There was a 4* express deal for $117 night, and Priceline had the following rates for specific 4* downtown hotels:  Indigo $153, Renaissance $149, Omni Grove Park Inn $249.

Bid $95 for downtown; rejected.  Think PL counter-offered $128.
Bid $105 for downtown + Biltmore Village (we wouldn't have minded staying there, but likely a throwaway as they seem to have no 4*s); rejected.
Bid $112 for downtown + Biltmore Village + Candler (throwaway); bid accepted for Hotel Indigo.

Room subtotal:$112.00
Taxes & fees:$24.26
Total charged today:$136.26
So, saved a measly $5 over the express deal (once taxes and fees figured in).  But not bad compared to the $153+tax rate through Priceline, which was incidentally the same as the best rate available on the hotel website.

Any savings off the Express Deal rate is good. Remember when Express Deals didn't even exist.
