So this was a bidding accident. One I will learn by and hopefully others as well. I've been looking/bidding for the Breckenridge area for a while. I usually wait more until the last minute, but with the limited options and it being a resort area I started earlier than usual (about a week and a half ago). Ive been wasting too much time with bidding combos and trying to search for the best deal and figure out which hotels had resort fees, all while trying to calm my travel partner who is meeting me for the weekend.

Bidding here is new to me, it is a resort area but the slopes close the weekend before our arrival, so I thought the prices were far to high considering it is a ski resort. Express Deal rates were $74 (+$20 per night resort fee, it warned me) for a 2.5* up to $115 for a 3.5* and then $295 for a 4*. All crazy prices to me for a small mountain town with no ski lifts going. So I tried bidding. I went all the way up to $75 on the 3* and 3.5* and $65 on the 2.5* with no results. Rack rates for the 2.5* were $74 up to $199 and lowest rate on the 3* and 3.5* was $115, strange since that is what the Express Deal was. Anyway I finally decided the Silverthorne area was cheaper, and the was an Express Deal there for a 2.5* with breakfast and all sorts of amenities for $55. I decided to try bidding because the rack prices for a 3.5*, 3* and 2.5* were all around $80-$120. I tried $55 for the 3.5* with the lowest rate being $89 and nothing. I then decided to try one last time for Breckenridge because it looked like prices dropped a little bit, starting with a 3.5* hotel which I didn't get. I then bid on a 3* for  $50 which I didn't get. This is where my mistake came into play. I THOUGHT I selected Keystone as a rebid area for Breckenridge, it isn't a real rebid area because it does have 3* hotels, but from all my searching on Priceline and hotels.com etc. nothing was available in Keystone for that star level, anyway, I put in $55 thinking I'd just try the 2.5* level in Silverthorne and if I didn't get it I'd just book the Express Deal. Well I double checked everything, dates, promised amenities, price, area, etc. and I got a hotel. What popped up was the Best Western Ptarmigan Lodge in Dillon. Hmmmmm.

I remember clicking Keystone, I do not remember selecting Silverthorne for the extra 3* try. I am assuming I was just doing it all too fast and when I double checked it wasn't a true double check just an automatic second look, so I ended up with the Best Western for the same price as the 2.5* Express Deal at $55 per night. It's right on the water of Lake Dillon, so it wasn't a drastic mistake, but I probably could have gotten the 2.5* Dillon area hotel for a bit less. I found the Express Deal for this same hotel, which I figured out based on amenities and quality rating, was $60 per night, so a bit less than that, and the rack rate is $80 per night. Total price after taxes and fees is $192.20 and no resort fee, so that's great.

Yup, I knew I was bidding a bit too early, but I caved into the pressure of my travel companion, and my own unfamiliarity with the area. As much as I wanted to be in the town of Breckenridge, I despise resort fees, and I doubt I could have gotten what I consider a reasonable rate with the resort fees included, so it worked out okay. However, I know I'll be going back in the near future and I'll do it the right way next time and try and get into the town. Still happy with the savings though!

When people are hounded by their travel companions, just book something cancellable and then tell them at the last minute that your plans have changed.

Oh! That is a great idea! I will have to do that for sure. Honestly you could write a book on how to get good travel deals.
