Needed 3 rooms for 3 guests coming into town.  Because I live here, after looking at the Priceline map for the Eagle, ID zone, I knew that there were only 2 possible hotels because of the way the map is drawn-- Eagle Hilton Garden Inn (actually in Eagle, in the extreme NE corner of the zone as drawn by Priceline), or the Springhill Suites (technically in NW Boise, where Boise/Meridian/Eagle all come together, in the extreme SE corner of the zone).  So I guess that's about as close as you can come to knowing which hotel you will get-- 50/50 shot.

I have stayed at both, and the Hilton is a bit nicer but the Springhill is good as well.

After checking with my guests, I first got this zone's "Express Deal" for $56/night for my first room, discovered that it was the Springhill Suites (the less desirable of the two for my needs mainly because of location), then went the bidding route and applied the 10% off rule and got my bid of $50 for the other two rooms.  Had I got the Hilton through the Express Deal I probably would have just bought the other two through that route, for fear of getting changed to the Springhill since it's not guaranteed that all hotels participate in both programs.  But getting the Springhill the first time, I didn't have much to lose by trying a lower bid first.

Best rate I could find online for the Springhill is $89 for this same night.  I used the referral link.

Thank you for posting your bid, and for starting your bids from our Priceline link. I've added this hotel to our Hotel List; thanks for reporting it to us. It appears that NYOP is currently not a 50/50 shot in this case: the HGI does not have two of the guaranteed amenities shown for 3* Eagle -- pets allowed and free breakfast.

The 3* Express Deal for this zone is now $76 with the following amenities: Free Internet in Room, Indoor Pool, Free Parking, Airport Shuttle, Business Center, Fitness Center. Does this exactly match the amenity list of the Express Deal you purchased? If not, do you remember/have access to what those amenities were?

Thank you for placing your bids through our link to Priceline. While I know what you are referring to with the 10% discount, it is not a rule. Bidding strategies should primarily be based on retail rates and based on that $89 rate and the fact that this is a very low occupancy Sunday and you had plenty of rebidding time, I would have started lower. I have extensive comments about Express Deals in Administrator Announcements, We've actually seen Marriotts come up significantly less than the Express Deal rate. Others as well, but primarily Marriotts. I would have started at $35. Most important lesson here, don't rely solely on the Express Deal rate. Your retail rate research should always prevail.

I think $50 was a little too high for a first bid, but not that bad (current rate for this hotel on Marriott.com is $99). I wouldn't have gone as low as $35, given that there's only one free rebid zone and apparently no other hotels available in this zone through NYOP. In pretty much every case when a Marriott property has come up for significantly less than the Express Deal rate, the Express Deal was for a different hotel; I don't think that was the case here.

I can't agree with tilepusher since your date is a low occupancy Sunday and you had plenty of re-bidding time, Is the Hilton also in this zone, tilepusher?

The HGI is in this zone. However, as I noted in my first response, it doesn't meet Priceline's guaranteed amenities for this zone and star level, so it doesn't appear that it's available through NYOP.

I just re-read your first reply and I don't see where you said that. What guaranteed amenities are you referring?

It's in the first paragraph; I've highlighted it above for emphasis. I was referring to the guaranteed amenities that are shown when you select a zone/star-level for your bid.

Looks like the Express Deal rate is better on Saturday night, and I realized that my original post had a slight error in the date -- check in was Saturday 1/18 (not 1/19). The first booking through Express Deal was actually for 2 nights (Saturday - Monday) and the offer was still for $56. The $50 NYOP offer was for Saturday night only.

The icon-based amenities that I see for the Eagle area (on either night) in the "Express Deals" listing are free wifi, free parking, pool, airport shuttle, business center, fitness center. So I don't think you can exclude the HGI based on that.

However, the NYOP 3* bid area does add pets and breakfast. I don't have pets and don't pay attention to that, but I do know from staying at both places in the past that HGI does not have free breakfast and Springhill Suites does.

So bottom line, the amenities list would disqualify HGI in the NYOP area, but not in the Express Deals area.

Thanks for the followup. That absolutely makes a difference as Saturday checkins are almost always higher and Sundays are the lowest occupancy nights of the week at hotels. Also, the best deals for Saturday checkins come at the last minute. This illustrates the importance of always posting accurate info.
