Hispaniola

The second-largest island in the Caribbean, divided between French rule (one third, the richest part) and Spanish rule (Eastern two thirds). French, English and Dutch pirates have stopping points in the uninhabited bays. The French part’s capital, Port de Paix, founded in 1665 by filibusters, just across Tortuga, is a flourishing town, surrounded by slave-dependent plantations.
