Caribbean Restaurant Chain To Bring ‘Heat’ To Lanterns

17 Jun 2010

Island Grill Barbados is gearing up to open its second restaurant in the new Lanterns Mall in Hastings by month-end with a similar look and some of the staff from its outlet at the Grantley Adams International Airport (shown here).

A Caribbean restaurant chain with outlets in two of the region’s international airports will be opening its second outlet in Barbados at the end of June.

Island Grill Barbados, a joint venture partnership between Island Grill Jamaica and Goddard Catering Group, will be opening another restaurant in Barbados in the soon-to-be-opened Lanterns mall in Hastings, Christ Church.

In announcing this development, Island Grill and Goddard Catering Group noted that they shared a common vision to bring great food from their islands to the wider Caribbean. Stewart Massiah, President of the Goddard Catering Group, explained, “Island Grill possesses immense potential for a truly indigenous Caribbean restaurant chain concept and we felt the time was right to broaden Island Grill’s reach beyond its airport locations to a wider and more diverse public. We already enjoy a successful partnership in three Island Grill eateries – one at the Grantley Adams International Airport and two in Jamaica’s international airports.”

Island Grill is known for its menu of Jerk Chicken, tropical BBQ, signature rices - pumpkin and callaloo - Jerk Fish and festival as well as the innovative use of the tastes and flavours of Jamaica and the Caribbean.

Goddard Catering Group invited Island Grill to grow their brand beyond Jamaica and set up operations in Barbados. CEO of Island Grill, Thalia Lyn believes the eatery will perform well at its new venue. “We feel strongly that the Island Grill concept will be enthusiastically received by Barbados and Barbadians from all walks of life. Our aim is to incorporate the best flavor and tastes of all the islands to build an authentic Caribbean menu and a true Caribbean restaurant chain.”

Island Grill was established in Jamaica in 1991. The Company has developed into the preeminent Jamaican Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) by combining Jamaican Jerk cooking and professional restaurant management systems. Now with 16 outlets, Island Grill is becoming one of the leading indigenous Caribbean chain restaurants.

Island Grill is the place for a quick good meal. The food is great and the price is right. The jerk chicken is very tasty also healthlier than the typical fried chicken and you can get a quarter chicken, rice and peas or pie, a festival and a soda for $20 Bajan.

There are two Spagos in Holetown, one at Settlers Beach and one in 1st or 2nd Street. Mainly pizzas but do other things as well. Very good for a more casual meal.

Spago on 2nd Street is one of my favourite restaurants--------------always consistant and I often get Take outs if they have time, and aren't too busy.. I have heard that Yvonne the owner is closing Oasis bar on 1st Street and opening the Spago on the South Coast which will be a Restaurant and Take out and will deliver within a certain distance .

She is Bajan born from the UK and has a good business head firmly set on her shoulders. The Spago in Holetown continues to be successful regardless of the decline in visitors and I wish her every success.
