Dead Turtle Found at Oistins: A Sad Start to the 2012 Nesting Season
This dead adult female hawksbill turtle was found floating at sea off Oistins on the 4th of June, 2012.

The turtle, tagged while nesting in May 2012, was brought in to shore on a surf board after being found.

At first thought to be a victim of entanglement in discarded line, closer inspection revealed that it was likely to have been deliberately tied up. If this was the case, this illegal act of sea turtle capture was compounded by the suffering caused to this animal. With the line digging deeply into its flesh, we can only guess whether it died of strangulation or drowning.

The knotting of nylon line around the turtle's limbs was unlikely to have been the result of an chance encounter with floating fishing line.

It is sad to think that anyone would knowingly inflict this type of cruelty. Our thanks go to all the concerned individuals involved in the reporting, recovering and/or burying of this animal.

Yes, definitely some very sad people who would even think about doing that!

On a brighter note .... At long last, I experienced seeing a beautiful turtle laying her eggs on White Sands Beach on Sunday 3rd June.
She took over an hour to do so and then scuttled off back to the ocean. Apparently she was a very young turtle and someone said it may have been her first laying. The turtle project people turned up but just missed her by about 10minutes or so.
It was a wonderful experience and something I will never forget. :D :D

I cannot fathom how anybody can be so cruel.

On a brighter note, there are lots of hatchings and egg layings happening on the south coast during the last few weeks so overall that has to be good news.

How sick, the poor turtle, it had only gone into the shore to lay it's eggs. I sincerely hope that this wasn't an attack on the turtle but a misguided and careless use of fishing line. The Bajans love the turtles and get just as excited as the rest of us when they see them.

Unfortunately BB it looks as thought the knots and the way the line is wrapped round the poor thing were done deliberately, i do hope you are right though and was an accident.

I wish the cruel low life that did this could be tied up and dumped in the sea.

Monday night a large turtle came up to lay behind Jentillia. The neighbours who saw it said it was huge - could have been a Leatherback although they normally nest on the east coast. I didn't see it myself but I saw the huge hole it dug but didn't seem to cover, probably meaning it moved on to a more promising location. I saddens me that whenever you start up a conversation with fellow locals about turtles immediately it turns into nostalgia for turtle meat and turtle eggs. You just know that a lot more poaching of turtles and their eggs is going on than that which gets into the news. I had to verbally censure one guy yesterday for remarking to me about the turtle from the night before: "all now you should be slapping some turtle on that grill."
