Saddened, as we're sure many on board here are, by the sudden passing of the great Tom Petty,
a favourite among the front-office crew.  Amazing catalogue of superb songs.

There's a fine appreciation of Petty's lyrics writing here, by Gabe Roth at Slate:

We'll just add this video of one of our favourite and lesser-known Petty songs:

I never got around to posting.

My favorite?  Breakdown.

I never saw him as a very dynamic performer but his music was enjoyable and from a technical POV - very clean IMO.

I don't like hearing about people leaving us - it just reminds me of my own mortality.

I just read where Neil Diamond can't perform anymore - tragic.

Yep, the guy just couldn't write a bad song.
Very moving tribute to him at the Grammys by another of our favourites, Stevie Nicks.
We're very much in agreement on your last pair of sentiments there -- it's why
we find major league "old-timers" games or ceremonies (any sport) unsettling
("jaysus, get a load of him!  Ten years younger than us and he looks 80!"...  or
"oh man, I remember when that guy could fly, and now he needs a walker!")

Anyway, to go out on a happier note, here's another excellent Petty number --
very relatable lyrics for one of us here, a Lewis Carroll collector/scholar to boot --
which also happens to be one of the all-time best music videos, from back in the
ancient days when artful and clever music videos were a thing...
