Hiya fellers -- apologies, but we have some miserable news to report, and your good thoughts,
good vibes, well-wishes, prayers or whatever would be appreciated.

We've alluded a few times over the last few weeks, here in the Forum, to the curious and unsettling
absence from the boards of one of our longest-tenured, most active, most helpful, and most respected
contributors, Dave "1961Yankees" Newman.  We finally took the step of trying to contact Dave off-list
to find out what was going on.

Dave's wife Marilyn replied to us today with shocking and horrible news.  Dave has been battling
a tremendously serious health challenge for the past month (we don't feel at liberty at this point
to go into detail, and we have very few details anyway).

Let's put some positive thoughts into and across the ether for Dave's success in this struggle and
for his full recovery.  Some encouraging words here in the Forum from you guys surely couldn't hurt.

From us here in the front office:  hang in there, Dave, we're pullin' for ya!

Many games have been won in the last of the ninth...
hang in there Dave and walk-on with a home run for a victory. God bless you.

That's really sad news in deed.

I was wondering what happened to Dave - he usually looks for the interesting stuff
- especially small games - a man after my own heart.

My prayers go out to Dave for a full and speedy recovery.

Hi Mike, thanks for inquiring.  We just recently shot off an e-mail to check in with
Marilyn (Mrs Dave) and find out how things were going.  We passed along the
notes of concern that you, John (jballgameca) and new guy jollybolly posted.
Unsure if either she or Dave were in the mood for any joking around, we asked her
to tell Dave we were mad at him because his absence has cut our Forum traffic
in half...

Today, Marilyn writes back with some positive news (we've edited out some specifics):
"Thank you for sharing all of the well wishes.  Dave is half-way through his [treatments].
He is doing well with both... which we have been told is a good sign.  He is starting to
show some fatigue which, frankly, I am surprised has not occurred sooner.  He is taking
three different types of rehab therapies which are helping post-surgery.
"He told me he would love to post something... maybe you can send me a link and I can
assist Dave with that.  He did get a good chuckle out of your email.
"Thank you and the rest of the gang for keeping Dave in your thoughts.  Every bit of
good vibes are appreciated."

We also told Marilyn that we'd hoped to forward a raft of well-wishes from the members,
but as Dave is well aware, we may have the slowest, quietest, most unresponsive
discussion board on the internet.  Three follow-ups to any post generally constitute
a groundswell of interest and enthusiasm, four follow-ups a riotous insurrection.
It'd be nice if some of the other members and visitors here could join Mike, John,
jolly and ourselves in posting a good thought...  doesn't have to be an epic poem,
y'know, just one line of concern...  Dave's still facing a tough battle.

Thanx for the update guys.

I'm sure looking forward to him posting again and telling us about his pickups
since he's way more active than I during the past year.

I do look a bit tho and haven't really found anything in my price range.
Big AH's - when they have stuff - is in poor shape and they expect "good" money for their crap IMO.
And let a game have a set of cards?  And it's off to the races!  Especially if in good shape
since they're destined for a PSA holder!

As it goes for "old" turn of the century chromolithographic games?  They almost immediately go
for more dough than I would want to spend on them.

I think that's enough OT stuff - or should I say - pontificating?

Please let Marilyn know that Mike R. is thinking about Dave and prayed for a speedy and hearty recovery.
Mike

Marilyn e-mailed us yesterday to let us know Dave is having a rough time of it
-- pretty debilitated after the first weeks-long phase of post-surgery treatment,
and then back in the ER Tuesday with complications.  Hopefully just a miserable
bump in the road to recovery, and not an out-&-out roadblock, eh?  Hang in there,
Dave (and Marilyn, too)!

Well-wishes posted here, or e-mailed to us [ Butch7999(at)aol.com ] for us to relay
to Dave & Marilyn, will continue to be much appreciated and possibly even actually
helpful.  Guys?

I'm not a regular reader of this board but I recognized 1961Yankees as
one of the posters that has given me many hours of fun. Seems like
everything he posts is something I'm scouring the Google-machine for,
looking for more pictures of or trying to find complete rules for.
I'm praying for him and his family and hope he's doing better every day.

Mike, John, Sep, thanks for those well-wishes, all of which have been
passed along to Dave via Marilyn, who thank you all as well.  And Sep,
spot on with your comments -- Dave has indeed been a research wizard.

We have an update from Marilyn just today!  The news is...  tentatively,
guardedly, somewhat sort of...  not bad.  Dave has continued treatment
and recovery in a skilled nursing facility for the last couple of weeks.
The current post-op diagnosis seems to be that he maybe might be
slightly improving, but also that it's still too early to say for certain.
He may be going home at the end of this week... depending.  In
any case, a lengthy rehab and recuperation lies ahead, and it'll be
a while before Dave's able to get back on the computer.

Marilyn says Dave appreciates the concern the Forum members
have shown, and he'd enjoy an e-mail or even a phone call from
any of the frequently-posting regulars on board.  If you want that
contact information, drop us a line off-list [ Butch7999(at)aol.com ]
and we'll send the info back to ya.

Hey, Mike, thanks for asking -- Dave appreciates it, and we needed it,
as we've been negligent both in checking in with Marilyn since Christmas
and reporting here since November (sorry, somehow we whiffed on relaying
Marilyn's holiday-season update).

Dave's been home for weeks now, still working through rehab, still a fairly
long ways from a full recovery, but the medical tests and reports do show
steady (if frustratingly slow), measurable improvement.  Thanks to your
prompt, we e-mailed Marilyn again a couple of days ago, and she replied
to let us know what we just told ya, and that Dave is again able to go out
and about (with some assistance), and that he was rather animatedly
engaged watching the Super Bowl, and that he does appreciate the
concern from his cyber-buddies here in the Forum (jeez, we'd sure like
to hear more, from more of you guys, that we could pass along to him).

This has been a really enormously debilitating medical ordeal, and Dave
could sure use some more encouragement and well-wishes from the
embarrassingly quiet rank-&-file membership.  C'mon, fellers, just a
cheering line or two, doesn't have to be poetry or a novel or even a
Hallmark card...  just a little note to say "chin up," "hang tough," "keep
'em flyin'"...

Thanx for the update guys.
Always nice to read some encouraging words that he doing better.
I'm inferring that he had a stroke?

Hang in there Dave - I miss your posts on really nice acquisitions buddy!

Hi Mike, thanks again for your concern.  We've e-mailed you off-list,
so now you know the whole story -- but even though Marilyn and Dave
okayed our posting that story here, this is a public board, viewable by
both members and non-members, and we don't think the details of
exactly what Dave's dealing with is any bees'-wax of the general public.
We'll say that the overall effect is similar to what you guessed, although
it's a whole different thing that's caused it.
The important bit is that tests continue to show incremental but steady
improvement, and that a few simple words of concern and encouragement
from the rest of the audience here would be helpful and much appreciated...

It's been a while since I've come to the boards but I thought I'd see how Dave is doing. Next time you talk to him let him know some stranger on the Internet is thinking about him. :)

Hey, fellers -- not real good news to report.  Dave's had something of
a setback in the last couple of weeks, and things aren't looking great.
We get the sense that, especially attitude-wise -- and attitude counts
for so much in recovery -- he is really down.  Now, more than ever,
he could really use some words of encouragement from the members
of this Forum.  Post a line here and we'll pass it along...
