Sad news for Denver this weekend......

"Les Mis" star Randal Keith out with fractured ankle

A Saturday matinee of the Arvada Center's "Les Miserables" ended miserably for Broadway star Randal Keith after a misstep on stage sent him to a hospital with a broken ankle.

Just 10 minutes into the performance, the leading man tripped on a corner of the massive barricade while exiting the fog-filled stage, said marketing director Cynthia DeLarber.

"He was just walking," DeLarber said.

Keith, who plays Jean Valjean, was diagnosed with a dislocated fracture in three places. He is expected to require surgery.

Saturday's matinee was canceled. Understudy Drew Frady, who has appeared in many Arvada Center productions, including the recent "Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story," took over the role Saturday night and will continue through the end of the run Oct. 19.

Audience members at the matinee were given tickets to an alternate performance or refunds, DeLarber said.

"Les Mis" is expected to draw record crowds to the intimate Arvada Center, one of only 15 regional theaters chosen by British producer Cameron Mackintosh for the popular production.

Keith, who has appeared in more performances of "Les Mis" than any other actor, was cast alongside 30 of the area's best-known actors.

..that barricade is an unwieldy piece of scenery, especially in the dim foggy air...I wonder why the understudy did not finish the matinee ?

Too bad for Randall. He is one of my fave's! Does anyone know where else this tour is performing?

It's a regional production at that theatre in Denver. They released the rights for "Les Miz" to 15 regional theatres.

If you go to google and type in "les miserables, regional," (without the quotes) many of the theatres doing the show come up. I know they just finished a run at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia.

They also did a production somewhat recently at the Chanhassen in Minnesota with Keith Rice as Javert (he was in the First National Company. He is truly incredible. He was too young to have the role full-time originally, so he was the First National's understudy but performed the role many, many times. == So it was awesome for him to actually have the role of Javert given to him (now that he is more the right age) - because Oh My Goodness!!!! HE IS INCREDIBLE!!! :0)

That’s such a bummer! I hope he has a fast recovery!

That sounds kinda like what happened to my friend in Les Mis this summer. He was playing Jean Valjean in a college production and he dislocated his shoulder on stage within the first few scenes. Their director had to go on (I don’t think there was an understudy) but luckily he was able to do the show the next day.

But anyway, I just thought that was a coincidence that two Jean Valjeans were hurt in the first few minutes of the show! ahaha

I hope he recovers fast! A broken ankle and surgery is NOT fun (unfortunately I’ve done that too)
