. . . originally, Charnin was going to use Bernadette Peters for the role of Annie!
But then I think they decided the show was to be a ground-breaker using so many real kids and real animals ! It sure worked out !

Are you guys talking about the "Bernadette in a training bra" comment in the memoir?

They weren't considering her. Agents just submitted the idea and Charnin "dummied up" a poster just to get a feel but they never wanted Bernadette. She was too old, even in 1973. It would have been ridiculous.

.....but the use of real kids and dogs was scary for them apparently. Yeah, the "poster" was in the book. For example, using a small female for Peter Pan was standard, but casting actual children was fairly unique.

...Annie: A Theater Memoir. Great book for any Annie fan ! Lots of photos and text, probably easy to find on Amazon etc.
