This is a question that has bugged me for a very long time lol and now I am going to hopefully find an answer.

Is there ANY "correct" way to have Annie's collar on her red dress (and the orphans rainbow dresses!) ???

The original Broadway collar seem to be different from the new tours and of course (need I even say the movie) -
The original companies seemed to have longer and thinner collars... and throughout the years they have seemed to get shorter and rounder. Any thoughts?

Julie maybe you can help me with this LOL.

No, there is no "correct" way to have the collar on the dress. I think it just depends on who is designing the dress. Since all of the original companies used the same costume designer, they were all essentially the same dress. Nowadays, anything goes.

Ahh ok, thank you lol. (that has been buggin me for yeaaaaaaars) :0)

Here's a picture (If I can get it to work) of the dresses when I directed and produced the show - I never seemed to get exactly what I wanted from the seemstress. Eventually she did get the black around the collars and belts.

Ok...here is a big try at the pics.

Ohhh one more - I forgot to ask... is there any "reason" for the colors that the orphans wore in the original and national tours? Like all molly's wore yellow? or anything like that? When I gave my kids the colors in the show, I just did it based on what I thought reminded me of those characters.

In the pictures on my above post: Dark Purple (July), Light Purple (Kate), Yellow (Tessie), Blue (Pepper), and Molly (Pink) oh and Orange was a made up orphan named Rosie (she was Tessie's understudy)...and jean blue was another made up orphan named Pudge (I got that name from one of the scores or stories of Annie somewhere a long time ago.

--- oh what the heck I'll put the pics here too so people can match up the orphans with the colors if they want to (I know we all like pics). LOL They are just basic snapshots so I could get the dresses. --- My kids were all double cast -- (Too bad I never did get one pic with ALL the kids. There was always someone out sick!)

There's no way of knowing if there was any formal discussion between Martin Charnin and the costume designer, Theoni Aldredge, about which orphan got what color dress. Honestly, it started to change a bit from company to company because they would recycle the dresses and gave the color to the girl who fit into the dress. Molly always ended up in yellow because that was always the smallest dress and Molly was always played by the smallest child. I think I wore blue as Tessie on tour and Pepper wore purple but on Broadway, I wore pink as Pepper and Tessie wore orange.
