So you guys helped me out tons in figuring out which canoe to rent as I embark on my first solo. My loop takes me from canoe/sunbeam/big trout/otterslides/sunbeam/western narrows/canoe. I was wondering if any of you have taken the portages north of sunbeam to mcintosh marsh, as well as the portages from burnt island to sunbeam? I've heard burnt island to sunbeam can be quite a challenge in the height of the summer. What can I expect?

I've done the portages between Burnt Island and Sunbeam a couple of times, though not recently enough to remember all the details. I don't remember it being anything particularly difficult. What would be a challenge in the height of the summer would be getting between Sunbeam and Bluejay.

I know this is an older post.

We tripped the Burnt Lake to Sunbeam then onto Tom Thompson in Mid August a few years ago with Kayaks and that was fun I wouldn't recommend longer portages with heavy Kayaks but with Canoes this route wouldn't be too bad. As I recall there was a larger Hill on the 680m portage, but the other portages weren't too bad.

However what we did do and will never recommend it to anyone especially in August is to go the Vanishing Pond to Blue Jay Lake. We figured this would be easier then lugging the Kayaks over the additional portages. The plan was to see if there was water in Vanishing pond, which there was and we actually met another group by the Sunbeam/Vanishing Pond portage and they went ahead of us. So off we went and it was going awesome until we hit the Mud pits/bog near Powell Lake. I think the group ahead cut off to Willow lake as we where alone. We could see the portage sign in the distance, but It took us hours to get through the muck and looking back I am pretty sure if we didn't have the Kayaks we wouldn't have made it. There where spots where we couldn't walk beside the kayaks, couldn't paddle, so we used the paddles as push sticks like a gondola. We were never as happy to do a portage then the one into Blue Jay lake.

Looking forward to this years adventure.
