Any one do the portage from Pen Lake to Night lake? Last year i looked for it for hours and couldn't complete my trip because i couldn't find it. I clearly could find the campsite to the south of it. and the little islands to its north. I canoed the shore from the islands to the campsite south of it a couple times. Then got out on the rocky outcrop near where it should be and hiked for hours toward Night lake. I used my GPS to criss cross the mapped out portage but never found anything that remotely resembled a used, open portage. I used a topographical map and Algonquins official map and a GPS. Every feature on the maps and GPS were easily found but not the portage.

So....

Who's done the portage??

What happened ??????

my wife and I did this portage last year.
look about 100m or so north of where its indicatated on the map. its on a sandy beach.I even recall sitting on some logs enjoying lunch.

also, your map might indicate a crazy rize and drop in elevation, but not to worry. the route appears to go around the hill rather than over it.

Lester is correct the portage is not exactly as it appears on the Algonquin Adventures map. The portage sort of rounds to the South of a good sized hill. A really nice beach at the Pen end and a camp site about 100m to the South of the start of the portage. I remember camping on Pen at age 7 on this very site my very first Algonquin backcountry trip. My brother and I spent many hours playing on that beach at the start of the Pen to Night portage.

I'm assuming Grant is referring to the park's Canoe Route Map, since this website doesn't have its 'own' map. The CRM shows the portage starting north of a small bay and point. Unfortunately, that is wrong.

Jeff's map has it right ...

Back in 2002 my nephew and I hiked the portage. That was way before the beginning of the website's Portage and Campsite Inventory section, so I didn't take as many photos as would have been helpful in retrospect.

I recall the sign being tucked back a bit from the beach ...

Here's a shot along the portage ...

Here's the view at the Night Lake end ...

And, here's the end-boardwalk, looking back toward Pen Lake ...

I could kick myself for not taking a shot of the portage landing on Pen Lake. I recall there was a large horizontal dead tree on the north end of the beach in front of the start of the portage, and a small rock point was visible to the north.

bingo. we're all on the same page now. that photo of the portage sign and the curvi g logs says it all.

patrol the shore, rather than trying to spot it from out in mid-lake.

Got it emailed to the FOAP/Park Management for correction to their CRM and added to the ABR's Map Submissions page .. http://www.abrweb.ca/Maps.html

Definately is a tad difficult to find at times.

It was easy for us but we came from the Nite Lake end
but later in the week on the way back to Rock after
a few nights on Pen/Clydesgale we trolled that side of the lake
and we could not find the portage !

Often we have to cruise very close to shore and look for paint scrape
on the rocks or signs of egress on shoreline as an indication of the portage
due to a missing sign or sign not easily visible depending on were it is
posted!

Hope this better than "just by luck" advice helps others down
the road as sometimes dead reckoning by the map
just doesn't work nor does nor scowering the shoreline and shoreline bottom
for signs of egress (e.g. Portage from Red Rock back to Opeongo was
impossible to find last year when trying to loop from Proulx through
Red Rock-> Opeongo -> Proulx and we ended up backtracking back
the way we came to get back to our basecamp in the dark after wasting precious
daylight hours looking for portage

Ditto for portage from Rose Lake to Fork Lake
