Hi All,

I know this info is here somewhere but I can't find it via search. Hopefully someone can help me out!

We're booked to head in off Rain over Labour Day weekend and I've booked one of the jump off sites for the night before. We'll be coming in very late (maybe after midnight depending on traffic). I know you need to get permits in Kearney. Does this mean we'd need to drive back to Kearney in the am before we set out? Or is there another way to register?

If we have to drive back, I'll cancel the jump off site and book some place to stay in Kearney. Any recommendations there? Word on the street is that Canoe Algonquin Rentals will let you pitch a tent there. Anyone done that before?

thanks!

To use a jump-off campsite, you need to arrive at the permit office before it closes for that day as they will issue a permit. If you arrive after they close, keep in mind your reservation is held until noon the next day, so unfortunately yes, you would have to drive back to Kearney in the morning to get the permit.

Sucks but that's what's up.

Thanks! I was worried that was the answer. I'll cancel and book something in Kearney for the night before. Doesn't make sense to drive all the way to the access point and then out and back again the next day.

Any recommendations on where to stay in Kearney are appreciated!

Google search:

Canoe Algonquin has a "bunkhouse", not sure what the deal is with that. I don't see it mentioned on their website now.

Base Camp Outfitter has a lodge right across from the office in Kearney. They advertise on this web page but here is the link.

You can also spend the night at the Algonquin Bound site but I don't know the details on it.

Wow, that is expensive for bunk rooms and shared bathrooms.

Be better off just staying in a hotel room in Huntsville for the same price.

Barbara, i had thought of the same thing, but it turns out that several B&B's in the area only book 2 night stays when a long weekend comes up. Be careful to cancel your jump off site, it might be difficult to book anything else as huntsville will be buzzing with people for that weekend. I had the ability to go in on the thursday before the long weekend and thought the nightly charge at one of the accessible lakes (like rain) might be a better (and cheaper) bet. Ofcourse, if due to work or other concerns that isnt possible, you indeed may have to scratch your head for a good solution. Whatever you decide, dont wait to long. I tried making changes to my backcountry reservations on aug 7, and was not able too, as all easily access points (1-4 on west side) were allready booked solid for the long weekend.

In the past I have just napped in the car at the Town Hall/Library/Permit Office. Never had a problem and if I recall this year the parking lot is also signed as car pool parking.
Now if only there was somewhere to grab a decent coffee in town.

Great News!

Canoe Algonquin allows you to camp in their yard if you're renting canoes from them. We'll be cancelling our jump off site and pitching a tent in the yard there to save a 2+ hour trip from the access point to Kearney and back the next day.

We won't be getting in till around midnight so I can't imagine we'll need anything more than a flat place to pitch a tent.
