This year I'd like to start a new 'tradition' .. a contest for Algonquin Park trip-logs. It won't be for forum postings, but rather will be for conventional stand-alone, conventional "text-and-photos-compositions" in word-processor format. All contest submissions will be subject to inclusion in the website's Trip-log Inventory.

This year's contest will be limited to logs of trips actually done in 2015, with a submissions' cut-off of year's end and contest results being announced by March 31st of 2016.

Judging will not hinge on the difficulty of the trip, but rather on the quality of the trip-logs' literary, photographic and backcountry-ethical content. At this outset, I'm announcing that I'm providing 3 prizes .. main and two runner-ups .. merchant gift cards for $100, $50 & $50 respectively .. with a possibility of even more, if sponsors can be enticed to participate!

And thanks to Ken Born (Bo) for suggesting we have a trip-log contest!

Barry,

You must be reading my mind. I had noticed that upon reading trip-logs maintained on this website, that there really weren't many new ones. So I thought a contest would serve a dual purpose....(1) Algonquin Adventures' posters writing trip-logs about their forages into Algonquin Park this year and winning possible prizes, and (2) updating the trip-log inventory with some possibly starting from access points where there are no trip-logs posted.

I am looking forward to participating in this contest. All I need now is a Photo Shooting 101 course!

Bo

Yes. I'm hoping it's a "win-win" situation. Thanks for kick-starting the idea!

Yes, there's been a trend (of which I have participated) of posting a brief trip report on the forum and not taking the time or energy to put it into a more permanent format.

I think the triplog section of the site is of great value and I am quite certain that this will improve its condition!

Hi Barry, could you expand on what "word processor" formats are? I am assuming .doc, .docx, html (email), .txt?

What about PDF?

I hope to have submission guidelines worked out within a week or two. And Paul .. yes .. appropriate 'word-processor format' would be the likes of .doc, .docx, .rft, .odt ... but not HTML or .txt. Apache Open Office 4.1.1 is the software package I'll be using to process submissions through the judging process. I'm anticipating resaving entries in PDF format anyway to help facilitate the judging process.

I'll also be developing photo-content file standards to likewise facilitate the judging process.

Trip-log entries will be unedited and unaltered while being judged. Entry of a trip-logs into the contest will automatically submit them for possible post-contest inclusion in the Algonquin Adventures Trip-log Inventory. Only at that time, will trip-logs be subject to the normal editing and photo-enhancement processes that has been followed with past regular website submissions.

These and other guidelines will be developed over the coming week or so and centralized in a specific Trip-log Contest page on the website.

In addition, I've already entered into preliminary discussions with one of the Algonquin Adventures sponsors towards possibly increasing the prizes and perhaps expanding the promotion of the winning trip-logs. I hope to have news on that front next week.

Everyone likes reading trip logs, what great motivation to write them! Well done!

Perhaps a very small subcategory could be created for those "front country" based adventures, as many great day trip stories have been written here based on the Algonquins drive in campgrounds?

Just a thought, and I know the predominant interest is back-country for sure (including my own), but especially those with young families might find some fun in that also . . .
