This year I'd like to start a new 'tradition' .. a contest for Algonquin Park trip-logs. It won't be for forum postings, but rather will be for conventional stand-alone, conventional "text-and-photos-compositions" in word-processor format. All contest submissions will be subject to inclusion in the website's Trip-log Inventory.

This year's contest will be limited to logs of trips actually done in 2015, with a submissions' cut-off of year's end and contest results being announced by March 31st of 2016.

Judging will not hinge on the difficulty of the trip, but rather on the quality of the trip-logs' literary, photographic and backcountry-ethical content. At this outset, I'm announcing that I'm providing 3 prizes .. main and two runner-ups .. merchant gift cards for $100, $50 & $50 respectively .. with a possibility of even more, if sponsors can be enticed to participate!

And thanks to Ken Born (Bo) for suggesting we have a trip-log contest!
Over on the official contest page at http://www.algonquinadventures.com/trip ... r5000.html , are a couple of pertinent details ...

"The text component will be judged on its literary merits .. the quality of the narration and the quality of its 'presentation' (its readability and grammar) .. towards a possible total of 50 points.

The photo component's images will be judged just as they are submitted .. also towards a possible total of 50 points.

In addition, up to an extra 20 points may be assigned in acknowledgement of exceptional exploratory initiatives, or of backcountry skills and/or ethics documented in the trip-log.

Lastly, the promotion, description or photography of unethical or illegal practices documented in the trip-log will be judged negatively .. towards a possible total of minus 20 points.

.. and ..

"The owner of the Algonquin Adventures website (Barry Bridgeford), its forum moderators and their family members .. plus advertisers on Algonquin Adventures, their employees and their family members .. are prohibited from participating in the contest."

Sorry PaP, the mod-squad's exclusion from the contest was part of my effort to exclude any perceptions of favouritsm. I'll try to make up for that exclusion somehow!

Hi Barry,

You've peaked my interest in this contest.

Someone touched on this in a previous post, but is it possible to create an image/logo for the winners of this competition to use like an image/logo to accompany their trip log on other sites? For example, if I won, the trip log would automatically be posted on my blog and it would be great to have an image/logo that I could use to identify that particular blog post/trip log as a winner of the Algonquin Adventures 2015 Trip-log Contest?

Hi Cobi

Looking back, it was Andy W. who'd posted .. "One thought/suggestion. For the winners of the TR's, is there any way to flag them as "winners" in the trip log? (Kind of like books that are published, receiving awards). Just thinking that for prosperity and recognition of achievement, it would be nice to have that designation marked in the journal."

Yes, your request ".. logo for the winners of this competition to use like an image/logo to accompany their trip log on other sites." does echo Andy's.

It makes sense and would cross benefit both winners and Algonquin Adventures! So, yes .. I'll cook-up a 'recognition logo' for winners!

Hi Barry,

That graphic looks great! It's a nice addition to being a winner.

This is a great idea! I find the trip logs really useful when trying to pick a route. I look forward to participating this year!

So where are the trip reports at? Does this contest mean we have to wait until the end of the year to see new TR's?

As explained in the "details" page at http://www.algonquinadventures.com/trip ... r5000.html ...

Website Use of Entries

Through the course of the year (leading up to the final judging), a short-list of the leading submissions will be maintained. Those submissions not in the short list for final judging may be published in the website's Trip-log Inventory prior to the final judging.

Before submissions are eventually added to the AA website's Trip-log Inventory, they will have any literary and ethical editing done, photo enhancements performed and be provided with accent and background images.

The ten winning trip-logs (in edited and enhanced form) will also eventually be included in the Algonquin Adventures website's Trip-log Inventory. They may also be included in the Algonquin Outfitters' website.

Beyond the winning trip-logs website announcements, their inclusion in the Algonquin Adventures Trip-log Inventory, and their Algonquin Outfitters website use .. the trip-log entries remain the copyrighted property of their original author/photographers.

So .. submissions not in the short list for final judging will most probably be featured on the front page of the website.

As of this date, there have not been any submissions. It is expected that submissions will pick-up in the fall.
