This year I'd like to start a new 'tradition' .. a contest for Algonquin Park trip-logs. It won't be for forum postings, but rather will be for conventional stand-alone, conventional "text-and-photos-compositions" in word-processor format. All contest submissions will be subject to inclusion in the website's Trip-log Inventory.

This year's contest will be limited to logs of trips actually done in 2015, with a submissions' cut-off of year's end and contest results being announced by March 31st of 2016.

Judging will not hinge on the difficulty of the trip, but rather on the quality of the trip-logs' literary, photographic and backcountry-ethical content. At this outset, I'm announcing that I'm providing 3 prizes .. main and two runner-ups .. merchant gift cards for $100, $50 & $50 respectively .. with a possibility of even more, if sponsors can be enticed to participate!

And thanks to Ken Born (Bo) for suggesting we have a trip-log contest!
Guess I will start logging my trips from now on!

I think this is a really good idea ... as little extra incentive ...

I just got back late last night from my six day trip and I'm downloading my videos and photos now, but I'll wait for you to post the standard before assembling a trip report.

I really enjoy reading the reports and they definitely helped me organize my 2015 trip, reading through as many as possible to pick out the little hidden gems before I chose my route.

I have enjoyed MANY trip logs through this site and found inspiration and new ideas for routes, camping and tripping techniques, etc through them. This is a fantastic idea. I look forward to reading and participating. Just got back from a four-day trip that was supposed to be 6. Kept copious notes and took more pics than ever before. Hopefully it'll all make for a decent submission. Thanks to Bo for inspiration and Barry for execution!

Would you consider a contest for the PCI project Barry? Might really improve the inventory of that too.

So if I understand correctly, trip logs submitted for the contest will not be published on the site until after it's done (early 2016)? So what would be the protocol for those who wish to share their experiences in real-time... post a quick summary on the forum and write a more detailed report for submission?

Also, any other guidelines we should be aware of, like preferred length etc?

I've completed details for the contest. Hopefully all your questions are covered .. http://www.algonquinadventures.com/trip ... r5000.html .

For example .. "Through the course of the year (leading up to the final judging), a short-list of the leading submissions will be maintained. Those submissions not in the short list for final judging may be published in the website's Trip-log Inventory prior to the final judging."

So, if you submitted a trip-log that hasn't made it into its category's short list, you could see it appear in the trip-log inventory prior to the end of the contest. That way all the submitted trip-logs won't be locked away or "bottle-necked" until after the contest judging is completed .. assuming there's a lot of submissions.

Been a long time since my last post and apologize that I haven't contributed to the forum for such a long time.
I thank those who have continued to contribute to this forum. Also great to see some of the more seasoned contributors re-surface as well

Getting back to the topic, this sounds like a great idea! I enjoy so much the TR's. Over the last few years, it seems like the more traditional TR's have started to fade away and I believe this is a great way to re-kindle that spirit. Thank you Barry !

One thought / suggestion. For the winners of the TR's, is there any way to flag them as "winners" in the trip log? (Kind of like books that are published, receiving awards). Just thinking that for prosperity and recognition of achievement, it would be nice to have that designation marked in the journal.

Just a thought.

My brother and I will be headed in for a week in July and I'll be sure to throw our contribution in the ring.

Hope this generates a lot of TR's I just love reading (and watching) everyone's experiences.

Wishing everyone a great season in APP

Sincerely,
Andy W

I love Andy's idea above of recognizing the winners with some special font or symbol in the list of triplogs as a "best of class" identification.

Also wondering, would it be valuable to have some educational elements in some of the triplogs such as "hanging a food bag" (to coincide with another discussion presently on the forum)? I know we've got YouTube that you can find virtually anything but perhaps this might be a good place for those sorts of elements as well?

I'm bummed that we don't have a trip planned for 2015 so I cannot compete but I am excited to see/read/watch the entries!

I started doing a trip log once and lost steam about halfway through writing it, but this will give me the push I need to actually complete one. I have a 9-day solo booked for this summer, so count me in!
