My wife and I have a 18 month old Akita Inu... We were not expecting to have any children, but happily, she has become pregnant! Our "boy" Thunder is very protective as most Akitas are and I have been doing a lot of reading but I am hoping for some tips on how to introduce Thunder to a new addition to the house? Any help would be appreciated!

our son we brought some of the hospital recieving blankets home and placed in the crate with our dogs. That way they will get the scent of the baby, then when you bring the baby home allow the dog to sniff the baby with you monitoring at all times. Make sure you include the dog in activities with the baby. My dogs would only come around the baby with our supervision. My female actually would sleep in the baby's room under his crib, after being around him more. However, i would not let the dogs be in the room too long without human interaction. The dog will start to find out that the baby is part of the pack. Congrats

That is pretty much what I read and heard...I am worried cause we have never crated him! Thunder has complete roam of the house to this point, and he has learned what is appropriate and not so far. But everything I have read says that baby and puppy should be raised together...that a baby after the dog is established is dangerous! I am a scared new "Dad to be" I guess, but we love our Thunder and I would hate to have to choose!!!

Thanks again for the response,

Freddy
