AL Also-Rans:
Sept 27-29 New York (A) at Kansas City
The recently eliminated Royals somehow remained competitive into the final week despite hitting far and away the fewest homers of any team in baseball.
They finish the year with just 116 bombs. They'll finally be able to rest some regulars.
Following a disappointing campaign, the Yankees bid farewell to aging star Mantle, retiring after this season, as well as the "Old Professor" Casey Stengel. Jeter day to day, while Royals are without Mike Sweeney and Willie Wilson.

Game 1: Yankees 9-5
The streaky Bobby Murcer (.269/7/36) mashes 3 home runs off three different pitchers to lead the Yankee charge.  Murcer hit .350 with 4 homers in June, and is currently at .327 for September.  No homers and a .209 mark combined for July-August.  After just 2 PH appearances in April, he spent time in the minors until his May 30 recall. Ron Guidry (W 12-9, 3.90) worked around solo HRs by Hal McRae (.237/3/30) and Amos Otis (.262/14/68), fanning 9 and allowing just the 2 runs in a short 5 inning win. Fitazmorris (L 2-4, 6.39) allows 6 in his 4 innings.

Game 2: Royals 6-2
Paul Splittorff is effective but goes just 4, lightening his load after a tough race.  Greg Holland (2 scoreless, W 4-1, 2.18), Wade Davis, Jeff Mongomery and Dan Quisenberry (S36, 2,70) preserve the win. Three hits including a triple (9), 2 RBI and 2 Runs scored for Frank White (.239). David Cone (L 10-12, 4.88) takes the loss, with Tom Tresh (.288/14/33) hitting the game's only homer.  Utility man Tresh, a switch hitter who feasts on lefties, has been a pleasant surprise for the very lefthanded Yanks.

Game 3: Yankees 8-6
Pettitte, on a short leash in the season finale, goes six, but his bid for win #14 is thwarted first by late season call-up Lorenzo Cain's 3 run homer (.235/3/11) and again as John Mayberry ties it at 4 with an RBI single. Bud Black is awarded the season's final start for KC.  It's just his second of the season, the first coming back in August when we went eight to combine with Quiz to shut out Boston 1-0. He's the team's unsung hero, having functioned as the only lefty in the pen for most of the season. Kelvin Herrera (L 1-2, 9.82) gives this one up as New York plates 4 in the 8th. Rivera (S31, 3.15) comes on to record the season's final out as the Royals rally and score 2 in the ninth. Elston Howard (.271/18/51) homers twice off Black. After sharing time with Munson in the early going, he established himself not only as the #1 catcher for NY, but probably the best in the AL.  Mantle makes a farewell PH appearance, sadly on the road, and walks. A weary Brett does the same, receiving a standing O from the home crowd, but is fanned by Betances.

New York Yankees Season Stats and Recap:
Yanks faltered almost out of the gate.  They were too lefthanded and suffered free agent losses of a good part of the pitching staff.
Some say manager Stengel has lost it - going way too long with aging ace Whitey Ford and keeping a slumping veteran superstar (Mantle) in the middle of the order all season.  Howard, Jeter, Mattingly and Bernie Williams had decent seasons and the bullpen was pretty good.  Overall a huge disappointment.

Kansas City Royals Stats and Recap
Royals stayed just close enough during July and August to say they were actually in the race.  In the end, they just weren't good enough. Last in the Majors with just 116 homers, they relied on pitching and speed to win, and when they suffered a 4 game late September sweep at the hands of a hot Cleveland team, it was pretty much over.  John Mayberry was clearly the offensive MVP, and Alcides Escobar was remarkable for a long stretch. Saberhagen had an excellent year with little support, and the bullpen was excellent.  Unsung hero:  Bud Black.  Biggest disappointment: Mike Sweeney, who managed just 7 homers.

NL Also-rans:
Sept 27-29  Washington at Arizona
Nats have Moises Alou out, while Ryan Zimmerman, Ellis Valentine and Stephen Strasburg are all set to return for at least the final game.
Hapless D-Backs are healthy other than bit player Conor Jackson. They've lost 4 straight.

Game 1: Nationals 10-2
Dennis Martinez (W 18-10, 3.33) cruises through 7 2-hit innings, allowing 2 runs early runs including one on a solo HR by Luis Gonzalez (.276/28/95).
"El Presidente" ties John Smoltz for second most wins in the NL behind Glavine's 19. Josh Collmenter, who's been an unsung hero working mostly in long and middle relief, earns a start (his 4th) and is again solid, throwing 6 innings and leaving with the score knotted at 2. Wilson Ramos' first homer of the season accounts for both runs. Arizona pen coughs it up, as Valverde (L 3-4, 4.47), Oliver Perez and Brad Ziegler combine to allow a 5 run eighth.  Rondell White (.189/1/2), Bryce Harper (.257/10/39) and Jose Vidro (.240/11/50) all homer off David Hernandez in a meaningless ninth. Adam LaRoche's 3 run triple off Perez busted it open after Washington had scratched out the lead run.

Game 2: Nationals 9-1
Arizona had been losing mostly close ones of late, but they now look like a team ready to get on with the off season. Nats grab a quick 4 run lead with Galarraga doubling in a pair and Valentine (.264/22/66) returning from the DL and blasting a 2 run shot in his first at-bat.  Omar Daal (L 7-14, 4.21) allowed another HR in the 3rd, a solo shot off the bat of Andre Dawson (3 for 3, walk, .264/21/85).  Ken Hill a solid six for the W (3-2, 3.99). Brandon Webb, normally a starter but sitting to allow some auditions, threw the last 4 frames for the D-Backs, fanning seven and allowing just one hit. Call-up Gerardo parra (.318) had 3 hits for the losers.

Game 3: Nationals 4-2
Seven straight losses and 11 of 12 to end the season for Arizona, and starter Brian Anderson (L 2-4, 5.19) exits in the 4th with a sore arm. Strasburg (W 5-9, 4.28) makes his first start in six weeks, and Nats fans have to be excited.  Six innings, 2 hits, no walks and six strikeouts in an 80 pitch performance for the righthander.  Dawson (22) had a homer for Washington.  Reardon (S7)

Arizona Diamondbacks Stats and Recap
Arizona had little to cheer about.  Luis Gonzalez was legit, Steve Finley led the majors in triples, and Mark Reynolds hit 29 bombs. he also struck out 194 times. 5th in the majors, and his BA and OBP were abysmal. Randy Johnson got little support but was outstanding. Only Tom Seaver struck out more batters.

Washington Nationals Stats and Recap
These guys hovered at .500 or just below through August, when a 3-7 divisional road trip followed by two home series losses to Philly and Atlanta ended hopes of a late run.  A 15-27 record in one run games didn't help, as the season run differential was actually +7. Star leadoff man Tim Raines led the league in steals with 66. His slow start - a .201 average through July 20 -  seemed endless. He finally got going and hit .330 over the final 10 weeks, but by that time the rest of the team seemed to cool off.  Dawson had a productive year as did Galarraga, Valentine, Fairly and Vidro.  Dennis Martinez was consistently good, and Jordan Zimmerman, called up in June, helped. The rest of the rotation was inconsistent.
