We're headed for HI, the Big Island, and the state HP, leaving on the 6th. Need info on accessing South Point. It seems we MUST rent a 4WD from Harpers to do Mauna Kea but cannot use the vehicle to travel the S.Point road to the lighthouse. Anybody with some nitty-gritty on this?

We went to South Point last June and the road was not bad and it takes you to the parking lot where you walk out to that beach. There will be a turn to the left where that parking lot is and the road is in really bad shape. That's when you know you've gone too far. The area is renowned for the wind - you'll see alot of dilapidated windmills on the way. The surf is real beautiful there too.

We called our hotel, the Sheraton, who connected us to Hertz. The agent there told us that only Harper rentals were allowed on Saddle Road. Thanks for the S. Point info. We're doing a Globus tour and only have one free day to pull this off and don't want to miss a beat.

If you have time, take the trail left (east) of South Point for a ways to the beach composed of green sand. Unusual. You'll see others on this well-used trail.

Based on what we've learned, there are no car rental police patrolling Saddle Road with rental company detectors. We'll rent a 4WD based on the best rate and do whatever Indiana Jones would do. Thanks for the heads up on Green Sand Beach.
