I just read that the road up Mount Michell is closed until further notice. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks,
Steve

... In February of this year, I spoke with a worker at Mount Mitchell State Park, and he told me the following:

1) The Blue Ridge Parkway road construction/ detour was going to take a little longer than Summer (2008).

2) The Mount Mitchell summit, itself, was to be closed until at least mid-to-late July (2008), due to construction at the summit observation deck.
------------

Perhaps these projects are both still incomplete?
It appears further research is needed.

I was on Mt Mitchell 2-3 weeks ago. Drove to the top parking lot but was not permitted to walk the final 100 feet to the summit because work was being done to it.

When going to Mt. Mitchell during this construction phase, please refer to the website in the HP Club Directory to get the latest conditions, and call the phone number to arrange access.

I think the main reason it was replaced because it was falling apart. The last time I was up there concrete was flaking off the observation deck. I hope to get up and see it this year. I never get confident in completion dates for any government funded construction projects.

Agreed. I recall that the tower was falling apart. Also, it was not ADD-friendly (disabled access). The new tower is much lower because it doesn't have those pesky tall trees to overlook (they've all died in the past decade). A year ago I published a series of color scans of old post-cards showing all the towers that existed on the summit. Quite a variety.
