About 600 square miles of the Uinta National Forest were closed to the public Tuesday as frequent avalanches continued to hit the area where a snowshoer was lost on Saturday.

Forest officials said the closure was needed to keep others from getting caught in slides, and to help the search for Marshall Higgins, 33, of Salt Lake City, who is presumed dead. He was snowshoeing with a friend, Jeff Frederick, also of Salt Lake City, when they were caught in an avalanche on Mount Timpanogos near Emerald Lake.
Anyone who violates the closure could be fined up to $5,000 and face up to six months in jail.

Two climbers and two skiers died in the French Alps on Sunday in a weekend with high avalanche risk, said rescue services. Two others were still missing.

Near the Courchevel ski station, an American from California was killed by an avalanche as he skied off-piste, said rescue services.

The victim was identified as Ajay Tambe, a 42-year-old man from Cupertino, California.

The bodies of two climbers were discovered at the base of a climb on the Mont-Blanc mountain, but it was unclear whether they fell or were victims of an avalanche, said rescue services.

New Year’s Day avalanche killed two snowmobilers near Rocky Mountain National Park, officials said.

A blizzard moving through the area near Trap Lake, northwest of the park, made communication difficult, so few details were available, said Larimer County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Eloise Campanella.

Avalanches killed seven Czech tourists Saturday in Slovakia’s highest mountain range and a German man on a snowshoe tour a day earlier in Switzerland, officials said.

The seven Czech mountaineers hit by the avalanche when they were sleeping early Saturday in the western part of the High Tatras range, Slovak rescue worker Rudolf Zupa said.
