1 571Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated, occasioned by the 2012 Olympic Games taking place in London, that the Olympic flame and by extension, the Olympic torch relay, has a Turkish origin.

According to star.gr, during a meeting they had with the President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, in London, both the Turkish Prime Minister and Turkish Youth & Sports Minister, Saut Kilic, agreed that the Olympic flame comes from Turkey.

Representatives of the Turkish government said that there is a mountain situated close to Anatalya, called Olympus, where the ground can be naturally light up due to the amount of methanium that exists in the area. According to an ancient myth, people used to light up the Olympic Torch in this place, commented Mr Erdogan.

Turkish Minister Suat Kilic stated during a press release, in a bid to convince officials of the International Olympic Committee that Turkey should host Olympics in the future, that Turkey is the birthplace of the Olympic flame and as a result, Mr Erdogan explained to Jacques Rogge that we want the Games back in our country. The IOC has the right to bring the Olympic flame back to its origin.

The chief of Greeces London Olympics mission Isidoros Kouvelos, has hit back at Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan and his view that Turkey are in fact the true owners of the Olympic flame and by connection, the Olympic spirit itself.

The Turks argue that a short distance from Antalya, is a mountain called Mount Olympus, where the ground is heated by natural ways, due to the existence of methane in the subsoil and support a local legend, according to which, the specific area is the original source of the Olympic flame that burns in Ancient Olympia.

In Erdogan's meeting with Olympic Games chief Jacques Rogge, the Turkish prime minister said that Turkey is the root of the Olympic Flame, and asked for it to be returned home , in order for it to coincide with the countrys play for the Olympic Games of 2020.

Kouvelos was sharp in his released statement, inviting Erdogan to top up on his Olympic history.

"The story is based on historic facts and evidence rather than myths, he said.

I would cordially like to invite Mr. Erdogan and his minister Mr. Kilic to ancient Olympia, to where the Olympic Academy resides, so they can both attend some interesting lectures on Olympic history. (AthensNews)

Kouvelos should not be racist and accept the fact that it is infact the turks who discovered the Olympic torch and the Olympic games as a whole!

Damn it ! Those Greek cheaters! They claim all the time that they have discovered everything!

The reality is that the true founder and the one who used it for the first time in the Olympics was this guy :

Do we really claim baklava is Greek? I doubt it, there are even bakeries in Greece which sell these kind of food as Anatolian.

As far as that we are pseudogreeks, it is true that we are not 100% from ancient Greeks and we were bastardized a bit by Turks and Arab pirates but we are more pure than any other nation today. (with the exception of Albanians who are the purest race on the planet since nobody cared to conquer Albania during history).

anchestors! And after that you dare to speak about Greeks!Shame on you!I can understand that you may feel some guilt
(the Turks I know feel a little "guilty" for their not so pure Turk bloodline) but for God's sake try to oppress

When did I say that? LOL

The only ones with inferiority complex are Greeks. Biggest farce identity on this planet is the pseudo identity of so called Greeks. Why would EU kick out you if they really think you are Ancient Greek?

"Today Greeks are not real Greeks. Before 1821 no Greek existed, they called themselves romans."

To be honest, the Greeks kept living on the same lands, kept using the same alphabet, kept speaking the same language (though inevitably modified within time and foreign influence) and remained the same "Mediterranean sea people" that they always were.

The distance between the Caucasoid modern Turks of Turkey and the Mongoloid proto-Turks who lived near China is much larger (in terms of race, culture and language.)

We claim that the Turkish Army was founded by Modu Chanyu (Mete Khan) in 209 BC, somewhere near China, which is ridiculous if you ask me. We are the "Anatolian Turks" so the correct foundation date should be 1071 AD, and the correct founder Alp Arslan.

TUAF, where did your ancestors come from ? Turks moved to seven directions (mostly westward) from the area known as mongolia today. So, culturally and historicly, anatolian turks are just a stop on the way. That Turkeys turks today live in anatolia dosent really change there roots, does it ?

Unless you made a mistake you said that one of your anchestors
was of Circassian origin.

There goes a Turk who looks serious and speaks the truth! What a rare thing.

I have some observations:
-Many Turks still look quite Mongoloid. Look at the faces of Mesut Yilmaz, Deniz Baykal, Tansu Ciller and Nehir Erdogan.
-Alp Arslan was a great man and Turks have the right to be proud of him. A very large part of modern Turks are descended from the Seljuk Turks of Alp Arslan.
However the Ottoman Turks came later from Central Asia at the 13th century, and they finally prevailed over the Seljuk Turks.Of course Ottoman and Seljuk Turks were 2 clans of the same nation.
