A horrible, horrible summer for NHL and ex-WHL tough guys. First Derek Boogaard, then Rick Rypien, and now Wade Belak has been found dead in Toronto.

People can say what they want about the NHL. But, when troubled people pass away, the first question is often about their 'upbringing'. In this case, the upbringing of Belak, Rypien and Boogard has to include their formative years spent in junior in the WHL. Rypien was revered in the way a pitbull was in dog fighting culture. Boogard was like a circus sideshow and was treated like garbage by Loucks in the Hat and Belak lived like a rock star in a WHL culture that gave guys like him a green light to live hard as long as he played tough. All three young men were great young men, but in many ways lived like WWF wrestlers. At least Vince McMahon doesn't take them until they can have a legal beer. Tough stuff. The culture we are all so proud of on the prairies may be killing our young gunslingers. Rough stuff.

He has kids and a wife and chooses this route. My pity is more for his family than him.

You're smarter than that. I realize that depression is very tough and can totally **** with your mind and ruins all common sense and rational thought. But the fact is, he has a wife and kids. It's very weird cause he always seemed like such a happy go lucky guy.
