It seems that in 1940, Great Britain was much more concerned about the Japanese cutting a canal across the Kra Isthmus and affecting the commercial importance of Singapore, than a military invasion. Watch this Pathetone Special:

The idea of building the Kra Canal is of course a very old one, first proposed in 1677. It was considered but in later years very much opposed by Britain, and in 1897 sovereign Thailand was persuaded through trade agreements with the British Empire not to build a canal, in order for the regional dominance of Singapore to be maintained. Now, another 120 years later, it appears that due to congestion in the Straits of Malacca and the benefits of shortened distances, the building of the canal is set to go ahead. See:
