The Charles Manson follower convicted of attempting to assassinate President Gerald Ford is set to be released from a federal prison in Texas later this month after serving more than 30 years behind bars.

Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme was a 26-year-old disciple of the cult murderer Manson when she aimed a semiautomatic .45- caliber pistol at Ford in September 1975 in Sacramento, Calif. Secret Service agents grabbed her and Ford was unhurt.

Fromme, now 60, is scheduled to be released on parole from the Federal Medical Center Carswell in Fort Worth on Aug. 16, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the court-appointed attorney who represented her at trial.

Yeah but Fromme was more of a minor player in the Manson Family. She wasn't involved in the murders on those nights but was still obviously caught up in the cult of Manson. If she's done her time as prescribed by the courts, I guess we need to let her go. But what's more disturbing is that they're thinking of letting Susan Atkins go because she has cancer.

Charles Manson Follower and would-be Pres Ford assassin is now free. Following are a few exerpts:

FORT WORTH, Texas The Charles Manson follower convicted of trying to assassinate President Gerald Ford was released Friday from a Texas prison hospital after more than three decades behind bars, a prison official said.

Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme was just 26 years old when she pointed a semiautomatic .45- caliber pistol at Ford in September 1975 in Sacramento, Calif. Secret Service agents grabbed her and Ford was unhurt.

Fromme, now 60, left the Federal Medical Center Carswell in Fort Worth at about 8 a.m. Friday, spokeswoman Dr. Maria Douglas said in a statement.

Fromme, who got a life term, became the first person sentenced under a special federal law covering assaults on U.S. presidents, a statute enacted after the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Ford was walking to the California State Capitol from his hotel when Fromme pushed through the crowd, drew the pistol from a holster on her thigh and pointed it at the president as he shook hands with well-wishers. She was restrained by Secret Service agents who wrested the gun away from her and led the president to safety.

She said it never occurred to her that she could wind up in prison.

Asked whether she had any regrets, Fromme said, "No. No, I don't. I feel it was fate." However, she said that she thought her incarceration was "unnecessary" and that she couldn't see herself repeating her offense.

From CBS:

In Chowchilla Wednesday night, Susan Atkins lost what is likely to be her last bid for freedom before she dies. Atkins suffers from brain cancer and slept through much of her four hour parole hearing.

Atkins was convicted of stabbing actress Sharon Tate 16 times, killing both Tate and her unborn son. Debra Tate, the sister of the actress, attended the hearing and spoke against a compassionate release for Atkins.

Many of those who spoke at the hearing believe Atkins current health condition does not remove her from the crimes she committed back in 1969 that she was originally sentenced to death.

Atkins will be up for parole again in three years, but may not live past the next three months.
