I came to this site many yrs ago.I finally got my quit in November of 2001.For several years I came to Blairsville with my halfhearted attempts and excuses as to why I lost my quit. The family here was always supportive and encouraging.I would soon start back on my quit.Jump to April 2012,I am in the doctor's office with my usual spring sinus infection.I ask for a chest x ray and my doctor says it's not needed but if it would make e feel better go ahead. The next day I had my x ray and before I got home I received a call to come to my doctors asap.Since that day it has been non stop doctors ,tests ,chemo, radiation and now the waiting game to see what the cancer has done.Non small cell lung cancer is my diagnosis which has spread to my lymph nodes.I have faith in the Lord for healing and wonderful family and friends to help me through. My advice to to who keep going back and forth with your quitis this....THIS IS NOT A GAME IT IS YOUR LIFE!THE TIME I WASTED COULD HAVE BEEN THE TIME THAT SAVED ME FROM THIS DIAGNOSIS.

I just happened in tonight, perhaps sensing you needed a hug. I remember you so well, and I am so sorry your struggle didn't end years ago...but now you have the most important reason to quit, and thank you soooo much for your bravery in sharing that reason.

You are not, and will not be, alone, Donna. I know I am not the only Fogey who stops in to check on what is going on, and know you will be held very close to all of our hearts.

Keep in touch, and stay strong...
LYMI,
Pat

Hi Donna,

Don't know if you remember me. I quit in September 2000 after 31 years of smoking. In November 2008, I had a lobectomy of the lower right lobe of my lung because of lung cancer. It was a very frightening time for me and my family.

To date, they have not detected any further cancer. I go for check-ups every three months, but during the last check-up they told me I only had to come in twice a year from now on. In February I retired from my job as a high school drama teacher, and went trekking through the jungles of Costa Rica and rappelling waterfalls. I toured California in April and acted in a play in July. A textbook I worked on will be available for sales in September. Not bad for a former smoker with 1/5 of her lungs missing and someone who also happens to have rheumatoid arthritis.

Hang in there, and fight the good fight. I wish you strength, courage and hope. For the rest of you, please keep your quits.

Kind Regards,
Jan

I'm so sorry. Thank you for your powerful reminder of just how horrible cigarettes are. My thoughts are with you.

It's so very hard to use yourself as an example of what smoking can do to your health, I'm so sorry you have to go through this.
Thank you for sharing. Your post is indeed a slap of reality that smoking harms.
One thing I did learn is that there is a power that works and that's faith and prayer. My thoughts are prayers are with you at this difficult time.
I have a friend who survived lung cancer. She's as strong now as she ever was.
Praying for a full recovery (((((Donna))))).
