Obama backs Ground Zero mosque (Jerusalem Post)
Obama throws support behind controversial Islamic center (CNN)
The problem with this sentiment is: tolerance is a two way street. Why should we bend over backwards to be "tolerant" to people who are clearly intolerant of us? Why should we tolerate their intolerance? Why should we respect their disrespect? But Obama said one "reason that we will win this fight" against terrorism is "our capacity to show not merely tolerance, but respect to those who are different from us -- a way of life that stands in stark contrast to the nihilism of those who attacked us on that September morning, and who continue to plot against us today."
New York City already has 30 mosques, why do we need one there? 30 mosques that no one has a problem with doesn't prove our tolerance--we have to have one at a grave site? That's not a symbol of tolerance; that's a symbol of insensitivity and stupidity.
Freedom of religion also means freedom from religion, meaning... you have the right to practice your religion as you see fit, but you don't have the right to shove your religion in my face anytime you feel like it. There is a time and a place for anything. Tolerance, true honest tolerance, is a two way street. Respect is a two way street.
More commentary and discussion:
We Muslims know the Ground Zero mosque is meant to be a deliberate provocation (discussion at GetBig.com)
Great irony in outcry over Ground Zero mosque (discussion at WashingtonPost.com)
Excellent discussions. One of the most cogent and comprehensive comments on this subject is:
Lets hope common sense prevails... otherwise, well, New Yorkers aren't going to take this crap lying down. You want to galvanize the public? You want to see what happens when lobotomized political correctness goes too far? Well, here's your hot button issue. Yeah, keep on disrespecting 9-11 victims in New York City and see what happens. Oh, this provocation is stirring up the lion's den, only it's not the response that the Muslim supremacists expected. They, and their politically correct enablers, are in for a rude awakening. This isn't going to start a war, but it is serving to wake up and inform the American people.Welton, with all due respect, you have been totally duped by the imam and his slick sales pitch and you(along with Mayor Bloomberg and Andrew Cuomo and other Mosque supporters) have become to the imam(as Lenin would say) "useful idiots".
First of all, Cordoba Spain under the Moors was not this utopia of "interfaith" harmony you claim. In fact, it was just the opposite. Cordoba, Spain, under the Moors was a sharia run society where Jews and Christians were second class citizens(and by the way that's what this imam believes in also---Jews and Christians are second class citizens in his mind to Muslims---and he has said so previously in Arabic through his promotions of sharia law). So the guy you Welton are promoting is in fact a stringent believer in discrimination against Jews and Christians(ask yourself Welton why the imam refuses to demand that Saudi Arabia allow churches and synagogues to be built in Mecca or elsewhere---in Saudi Arabia such churches and synagogues are illegal by law and your "interfaith" "progressive" hero imam hasn't the slightest problem with such an arrangement---in fact rather he endorses the prohibition on church and mosque building).
Secondly, you've entirely missed the Islamic significance of the name "Cordoba House". Cordoba House is inspired by the Cordoba Mosque(which was built not as a symbol of "interfaith" harmony but rather as a symbol of conquest of Christian Spain). Likewise, "Cordoba House" will be seen by jihadists and Islamic supremacists as a monument to Islamic victory on 9/11(consequently the Mosque has a national security significance to us and its construction will inspire jihadists and Islamic supremacists worldwide who will see it for what it is---a monument to Islamic victory---and proof that America is too weak and guilt ridden by political correctness to withstand Islamic supremacism for long)
Third, if your hero imam really cared about "interfaith" harmony, he would not be building at this location and opening the mosque on September 11, 2011. This is such a provocative gesture(and the imam knows it) that it reveals who the imam really is(a slick deceiver who has ulterior motives beyond the stated objectives of his English speeches to people such as you). It's the location stupid. Building a mosque at Ground Zero is akin to building a Japanese Shinto shrine next to the USS Arizona(at a minimum it shows extremely bad taste and insensitivity). One can only hope the dumb, ill conceived, and foolish views of someone like Welton will not prevail and that common sense will.

Obama's digging his own political grave on this one. Well, maybe that's already been dug, but this is making it deeper, and this is helping to take the whole irrational philosophy of political correctness and "tolerance über alles" down with him. Good riddance.
