Nice work, particularly on the "shimmery" look for the drow male's cloak! :D

LOL, yes, but it also looks like you used some red highlights, perhaps?---combined with the semi-gloss, it seems like the cloak is changing colors a little (to my eye, at least ;) ).

Not that I recall. I paint my blacks more or less the same way.

Black Base
German Grey Drybrush
Dark Blue Grey Drybrush
black ink
highlight with Dark Blue Grey
All VMC paints.

The semi gloss may be picking up some reflection from the boots however! :D

My latest, Not-Merlin drying and waiting for basing :D

Fantastic paint job on all the minis! Im not sure about the clear bases - think I prefer the resin textured types - excellent work! :D

Really nice painting. You are very good at dark/muted colours - very subtle!

Thanks Chaps! They are a true joy to paint!

David, I stayed very far away from painting black for a long time, mostly because when I tried I ended up with grey. I'm happy to share my technique.

I use VMC paints and inks for this.

1) Black undercoat (Surprise! :P)
2) Dry brush German Grey
3) Dry brush Dark Bluegrey
4) Wash in black ink. This will create some nice highlights over the two drybrush stages but often mutes the colors too much.
5) I rehit the highlights with the Dark Blue Grey again, but this time by brush instead of dry brush and keep them sharp as often as I can.

I'm really pleased with the effects.
