Hello Everyone, I just stumble across this board as I've been furiously googling since I was told my Fhs levels are 59.

I'm 35, and went on the pill when I was 14 or so, due to bad cramps. I've been on it more or less since then, taking it continuously (breaking every 3-4 months for a period) for the last 5 or 6 years.

I'm engaged and my fiance has had a vasectomy, so before tackling that issue, I wanted to be sure all was ok on my end. Before the pill I had normal cycles, no problems, but that was 20 yrs ago.

My doc recommended I go off the pill, then after 30 days of no pills, come in for the 3rd day test. I had the initial period after coming off the pill, but it was very light. A week or so later, I started noticing I was getting hot flashes, had trouble sleeping, etc. I figured it was withdrawal symptoms, no biggie. A month later when I expected to start, I didn't. Though I did get bad cramps, lower back pain, etc. Those symptoms lasted for about 3 weeks but no bleed. The doc called in a 5 day course of progesterone, 3 weeks later, still nothing. But the hot flashes are still happening, bad sleep, ugh.

So the doc ran blood work--fhs level is 59. He tells me I'm basically in menapause, with all the symptoms, etc. He referred me to his brother, a fertility specialist (whose name I've seen on message boards, he's supposedly very good). I see him in a month.

I'm so conflicted--he made it sound like the likelihood of conceiving was very low and ivf would have to happen, if it even is possible. I thought reversing the vasectomy was going to be the real challenge here, I never expected to have this issue. We had wrapped our brain (and pocketbook) around the 10g it would cost for the reversal, but Ivf is another story (a story I have no idea about!) And I'm still feeling like its only been 2 months--maybe my body just needs time to readjust?

Have you heard of someone's levels decreasing on their own? I'm ok to deal with the hotflashes for as long as it takes, if my body just needs to reset itself. I'm also reading on here people using supplements to get things started--not sure if that is wise before I see this doctor? Will that interfere with anything he might want to check?

I'd love any feedback you have--this has thrown me for a huge loop, not sure what I should be thinking.....

Thank you,
Megan

I would not be overly concerned just yet. After I went off the pill the first time I did not have a period for three months. I did not have my FSH tested, but I am sure it was high. On the sixth cycle after my period started back I got pregnant and carried to term. Trying for #2 same thing, but I did get my FSH tested and it was 29 at 34 years old. I am not too worried BCP can cause your FSH to be high temporarily.

I've heard it can take a year for the body to get back to normal. yikes. I hope it's sooner for you.

Have you looked into doing some Tradition Chinese Medicine? I took the herbs (I had to cook it into a "tea" every 5 days with a fresh bag of herbs, changing depending on where I was in my cycle) and the first month I could see a difference (better CM) and by the second cycle, it was great and third great too. Levelling off in 4rth and 5th so quit. But those cycles did the trick, I got my body back and felt normal and 2 cycles later conc my DD naturally.
I also had the acupuncture twice a cycle, once before O and again after. Also used OPKs bought in bunches of 100 from saveontests.

BTW unless your Dr did a day 3 FSH test on a real cycle, that fsh reading isn't quite accurate and you need to know what the estrogen was too because an elevated estrogen artificially lowers the fsh.

Last summer I started having hotflashes, hadn't had an AF for over 6mos so had my FSH tested (really had to insist, what a pain my GP is) and it was in the 50s with low estrogen so I (ran) to the pharmacy, started taking some menopausal HRT herbal formula (Swiss natural sources) and some Evening Primrose Oil and marched back to my GO for another FSH E2 blood work a few months later and he called me up with the results, I was all back to normal according to him. So I asked what my numbers were: fsh 7--I said, wow, I've never seen it that low, what's my estrogen: 398. I asked if he felt that was normal. he said yes. Just goes to show you that IF women tend to know more than some general Ps.
I stopped taking the supplements and fast forward to this summer and my AFs are all messed up again and I am having hot flashes again. I am 42, my mother had her change of life at 45 so, well, I think that's what is in my future which is fine since we aren't ttc but I'd like more libido please. LOL.

Here's a good site for hormone numbers:http://www.fertilityplus.org/faq/hormonelevels.html

another thing to consider, if you are going to use IVF, talk to your Fert Dr (RE) about a reversal vs an extraction (is that what it would be called? When the dr extracts the sperm directly from the testes) might be cheaper and more sure. I've read that reversals aren't perfect; have you read that too?
Good luck and keep us posted.

my fsh was 26 for both my nat conc miracles. see my sig below for details

me:42, DH 43
FSH 26
DS: born by c-sec Apr15'03, 9lbs5oz 41wks gest. (after 4 years of ttc, starting in 1998)
DD born by c-sec Oct 13 2007, 8lbs13oz 39wk gest. (after just under 3 years of ttc)
~~DS was conceived naturally the cycle following a cancelled DE IVF, using my good friend's eggs. She was on the verge of hyperstimming.
~~DD's nat conception I attribute to using OPKs like a crazy nut, eating grapefruit daily and using preseed. also 5 cycles of TCM ending 2 cycles before that lucky cycle.

When you go off of it, fsh goes all out of whack for awhile. There are old threads about it... please look into this and be aware that most doctors are not very well informed about this at all. Most likely you are just fine. Checking ovary size might be a good idea because this doesn't tend to fluctuate!

Hi, and thanks everyone for the responses!

Do you think its a good idea to go ahead and start taking herbal supplements before seeing the specialist? I don't want to do anything to alter whatever it is they'd recommend.....and I'm a bit confused--if the supplements lower the levels, does that actually change the fact there could be 'ovarian failure?" I'm confused if ovarian failure causes the high levels, or do high levels cause ovarian failure (and can that be reversed once its happened?)

I so want the hot flashes to go (having one now--killer!) but I'm worried that taking pills (bc) might have caused this, so is taking anything else just altering nature more?

I'm sure I'm getting ahead of myself, but it so would have helped if the doc would have so much have said "well its possible the bcp could be causing this and it could change...." It just felt so definitive.

Its helped so much, reading your responses. Thank you!!

I'm curious about the Swiss Natural HRT stuff you were taking. You said you hadn't had AF in 6 months, then started taking it, then went back three months later and had your FSH/E2 tested. Did you get AF after you started it or did you just go in for b/w without AF?
