I've noticed a lot of smoke pouring into the valley from over the foothills. Is there a big fire somewhere close?

There is definitely a fire somewhere today. The smoke was really thick.

I saw a large fire today from the top of Thompson. It looked to be near Atlanta. The web site says for the most recent fires listed that they haven't been active since 10/4. Perhaps it's a prescribed burn.

I saw it too Matt. Definitely something new and close. Not sure if it was just the wind shifting or what, but a thick layer of smoke, pretty localized over the central ridge.

I still haven't really been able to find anything conclusive about this. You'd think it would be mentioned on the news at least. It looked like enough smoke to be a pretty big fire.

prescribed fire month. There will be several more, including lots of slash piles, until measurable snow accumulates. It's the perfect time for controlled burns to smolder away, with a lot of smoke (unfortunately). Personally, I wish I was out there with a drip torch myself. With this nice high pressure, the smoke will continue to settle in the valley until we get a good storm. I'll take this kind of inversion over the winter-toxic-fog-soup in the next few months.
