As we follow the Olympics we all have one dream... for Dragon Boat to one day be part of the games. Now is the time for students to initiate this idea! At this intercollegiate dragon boat mix-and-mingle event, we hope to bring paddlers from all Ontario University teams together and to create a network of student paddlers.

As we build this student network to share knowledge and resources in the sport, the goal is to increase the competition within the University division. As the Universities becomes stronger and comes closer together (through social events, group fitness events..etc.), the long term goal is to cohesively vie the sport of Dragon Boating to be part of the OUA (Ontario University Athletics) or in other words, be a Varsity Sport. This can be made possible through the involvement in the Ontario Student Racing League organized by Dragon Boat Canada.

In the coming year, we are excited to introduce the Ontario Student Racing League. Certain dragon boat festivals that are organized in Ontario will participate in this League, including Milton, Pickering and Toronto Islands etc.. Results from these races will account for points towards your teams standing in the Canadian Student Racing League (formerly known as CURL). Top 3 teams in CSRL will be medalled at the National Dragon Boat Festival and the top team will be the recipient of title CSRL Champions.

To further the bonding of University Dragon Boat teams, this event will fundraise for a (for-fun) Ontario intercollegiate dragon boat team that will be raced in 2013! Further details will be announced at the event. We hope for full support from everyone in the dragonboating community and we look forward to seeing everyone that night!

Sounds like an interesting idea to continue the growth of dragon boating starting with university students.

It just seems like another university party to me. DBC has apparently been trying to add dragon boat into the OUA and has been failing, so I'm not sure how university students plan on accomplishing this. I also don't see the purpose of the intercollegiate dragon boat team, especially if it's started by two of the lowest ranking universities. The CSRL is just another gold medal for the New Dragons. Good intent, just seems to be a lack of direction.

I agree, this idea is not going in the right direction. I understand and would love to see it become an OUA sport. however, it is difficult to make dragonboating an OUA sport because it is not a highly recognized sport in canada (not much people know what it is) universities are not going to waste their money or even fund the dragonboat team. making it an OUA sport, will cause the multiple UofT teams to be banished.

This is what was said at the dbc meeting in Montreal last week. The u23 and university are the program Dbc I pushing for most to develop athletes, but dragon boat is not recognized by sport Canada and therefore no funding for athletes or programs. Instead of having development camps and athlete identification programs we have a bunch of university students doing their own thing.
