I have some questions about Bix. In "Red Hot Jazz" I read abour Paul whitemans radio program from late 20. It is some numbers with Bix, but they are only like information, and they are not on "Red Hot Jazz". F.ex. Making Whoopie - Somebody said me that it is no Bix. I saw you with Paul several years ago inPhil Pospychala's Tribute to Bix.

According to discographies, the soloist who plays 8 bars at the end of Whiteman's Dec 22, 1928 recording of "Makin' Whoopee" is Manny Klein. However, Frank does not agree. Frank favors Charlie Margulis. Bix was in the Rivercrest Sanatorium at this time suffering from pneumonia. See what Frank wrote,

According to "Paul Whiteman" by Don Rayno [page 657] Don gives the hot solo credit to Mannie Klein [subbing for an ill Bix].

Don told me he went to Williams College to look at the original scores and compare them to the records [to ID the soloists] for the book. I wonder if the part read "Bix" or "Mannie" ?

The Whiteman arrangements were written that way instead of Trumpet 1, Trumpet 2 and so on...the player's names were used on the music.
