Dymitr M, ex-trombonist with Paul and His Gang, kindly sent an mp3 file of Rudy Vallee and His Connecticut Yankees' Jan 10, 1929 recording of the beautiful tune "If I Had You."

Listen in particular to the trombone solo after the first vocal. Really nice recording of this lovely tune.

Dymitr wrote, "I send you a nice Miff Mole's 8-bar solo with Rudy Vallee's Orchestra, "IF I HAD YOU." Indeed, quite reminiscent of  Miff Mole. But according to Rust's Dance Band discography (1975 edition), the trombonist is Hal Matthews. When I mentioned this to Dymitr, he wrote back, "I cannot believe that this is not Miff. I listened to these 8 bars about a hundred times, and every part of the solo is very much like Miff."

Opinions?

PS Trombonist Hal Matthews has a connection to Bix. Matthews recorded with Whiteman and Trumbauer's bands in the 1930s. And Matthews and Mole were with Whiteman's band at the same time.

I remind you of my posting about "If I Had You " ad nauseam in http://www.network54.com/Forum/27140/message/1211032207 I had a link to Vallee's version!!
