In Mick's white coverd book, on page 69, just below the picture of the white FROCK, there is a photo of Sailor Malan talking to a bunch of pilots. At least five of them are wearing knit leg warmers. Does anybody have any info on these? Patterns, colours, better photos, etc.?

cheers,

A lot of that sort of stuff was hand knitted at home by wives, mothers, etc and handed out by the RAF Comforts Committee. My own school had a 'Mothers Sewing Party' which made things like that for the troops. I think there were a few commercially available knitting patterns, with items made in appropriate colours, RAF Blue, black, green etc. The patterns have often turned up on ebay although I dont recall seeing any for leg warmers

Chaps,

We all spend a lot of time on ebay looking for stuff. If anybody any of the comfort committee patterns for use by RAF types, please direct my attention to it here on the forum. Thanks.

Cheers,

Lots out there, all designed by differing schools of sewing and knitting ladies magazine etc.
Have you got a link to the pic?
I know there are knee warmers and tube socks, never seen the leg warmers though! Having visions of Flashdance now!

I have many service patterns for men and women, if there's something specific I can have a look for you.

Kate,

Thanks for the reply. The leg warmers that tantalise you so much are all that I am after. Please keep your eyes open for a pattern out there...

It is an awkward system to say the least. Must have been created by a Brit.....
