Morning all!
I have a BoB Irvin, have tentatively narrowed down the owner to one of three BoB pilots.
Does anyone know on what basis an Irvin was issued?
i.e. To fit over SD, or based on the chest size of the pilot, or what?
This one is a 40".
Thanks,
Have a good week !

Sized to fit over the service uniform. Most guys were pretty small -- chests in the size 36 range so a size 40 was a medium size for an Irvin as worn over the uniform.

What are you using to ID the jacket/owner?

Thanks for the respo' Chris.
What I am using is the jacket label, with surname, date of issue, size label (40) and available pics of the three.
Of course, it might be that RAF Innsworth tell me there were more than than three with the same surname, of flying status!

Cheers,
Dickie

Yes, Irvins were isssued to go over service uniform. Here are the sizes and measurements taken from the labels I have seen.

Jackets size
22C/317 1
22C/326 2 Height...5'4"- 5'6" Breast...34" -36" .waist....30"-32"
22C/319 3 HEIGHT 5' 7 - 5' 8" - BREAST 34-36" - WAIST 30-32"
22C/320 4 Height 5'.8/5.9" Breast 36/38" Waist 32/34"
22C/321 5 Height 5’10/5’11, breast 38/40, waist 34/36”
22C/322 6 Height 5'11 to 6'0" Chest 40-42 Waist 36-38
22C/323 7 Height 6'- 6'2" chest ? Waist?
22C/324 8 Height 6’ 2” -6’.4”, breast 42”-44”, waist 38”40”

Before 1939 sizes of Irvins were apparently just given in chest sizes, the most common, according to the labels I have seen, being a 44. Andrew

22C/326 is for size 2 trousers - 22C/318 is the correct number for the size 2 jacket.

Of course it is. I must have copied this from my list of trousers by mistake.
