Schmidt is a 4.4% ABV beer created by Jacob Schmidt Brewing Co. in St. Paul, MN., and was originally known as "The Brew That Grew With the Great Northwest." The brewery was bought by G. Heileman Brewing Co. in 1972, who later went on to also purchase Christian Schmidt Brewing Co., the makers of Schmidt's, a popular beer in the Philadelphia area. Now owning both Schmidt's and Schmidt, they combined the two similarly named beers into one brand. At first the merged brand was known as Schmidt's and continued using the Schmidt's coat of arms, combined with the logo and animal/outdoor sportsman theme of Schmidt. However, Pabst Brewing eventually bought out G. Heileman, and today the merged brand is back to being simply Schmidt.
