Am trying to determine the rear axle ratio of my 56 Dodge pickup. It is a V8 with four speed transmission. Am able to do about 60 mph on highway but would like more speed. When I bought the truck in 2005 the seller said it was 3:55, but I am skeptical given the whine/howling at 60 and above. Are there any stampings that would reveal that information (and avoid pulling the gears and counting)?

Many thanks, Lorne

You can jack one wheel off the ground and count the number of driveshaft revolutions while turning the wheel twice (with the car in neutral). The number of times the driveshaft turns is your axle ratio.
