Smilies inserted in any native VBulletin message are not shown on the IPhone client. Instead, the ":text:" tag is shown.

This is currently not supported until to later versions. We might convert it to emoji but will need some work to map the emoticon from vbulletin to iphone compatibile one.

There are only 11 standard vbulletin smillies - do you guys add your own sets on top of them? What are the "standard" nowadays in world of vbulletin?

i always knew this would be a hard task. there are so many different smilies and each board can make their own tag for a smiley. there is no way for u to cover it all. good luck with doing that

i could have my board set to show a happy face but have a frown tag. ha ha

if there was anyway u could get the app to retrieve the image the same way vb does u would be set.

I don't think we will simply display the smiles as simple image as it will be unmanagable in terms of dimension control on small screen, plus the animinated GIF won't work on iphone - so u will only see first frame of the GIF.

Instead what we can do is display emoji by mapping the default set of vbulletin smilies to the standard iphone emoticon set.

How do you like this iPhone built in support? Note that we can only display it, we cannot activated the keyboard because Apple restricts we doing it.

thats fine with me because i know it would be dumb hard to even try to impliment that.

when ever someone uses a tag u don't know like :wiwEYk: u just omit it from the post when viewing via tapatalk app. the same way u omit the sig

Yes, we add emoticon set and never rely on the generic, standard set. I think you should simply display them as is.

Same here. I'd say just leave them be -- diving into displaying BBCode is a no win situation.

Not showing smilies is a very big problem in our pokerforum. We use smilies as card icons to discuss pokerhands (eg. http://www.raise.ch/forum/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=8088). This is a common practice. Without the smilies Tapatalk is absolutely useless...! :(

Useless is a but extreme but it is much needed. Try not to be so harsh that isn't the way to get them to focus on it.

Sorry, it was not my intention to be rude. (English is not my native language). I should better say "useless for our forumusers". Of course Tapatalk is a great app. Just in our case, we can not use it when we don't see the smilies.

Without the smilies the text looks like this:

(Compare with the link from above.)

No problem Atila I totally understand. I think we are seeing a light of how to resolve this but everything takes time..

Just an idea: Why not implementing an option/setup page and let the user switch between:
    - show/hide smillies
    - show/hide pictures
    - show/hide stickies
    etc.

Btw: When hidding smilies or pictures, it would be useful to show a small symbol, so the user knows that a graphic should be there.

And your intention is to save bandwidth so the app can load everything faster? More like a "text-only" mode?
  14. Attila New Member

Not sure if I understand you last post correct. But if the user can decide what to show he has the choice between a low-bandwidth text-only and a mid- or high-bandwidth full-graphic mode. In a WLAN he can use the graphic-mode and on the road the text-only mode.

So if I understand you correctly you want an option to automatically switch to lo-fi mode in 2G connection
  16. Attila New Member

No, it has nothing to do with the iPhone generation (2G/3G). My input was just a setup page to let the user decide if Tapatalk should show smilies/images/stickies/etc. or not. So every user can make their own choice. It should not switch automatically!

If a user likes to see images and smilies the app needs more bandwidth or course. If the user likes a more 'text only' mode (without images and smilies) the app is faster. Every user should have the option to switch on/off the different settings.

I am moving this thread to Feature Request and keep track from there.

Nearly two month and some updates later I like to ask if there are some news about the smilie problem?

Hello? Any news on this problem? With every update I hope that smilies will be displayed and everytime I have to realize that it not the case...

We will rewrite the thread display portion in next few weeks to provide better viewing experience and stability - we hope the new change will allow us to add feature like smilies more easily.
