why do i have to manually refresh to see new posts when I start the app after not having started it for a few hours? Any way to automatically refresh when I open a forum?

Are you talking about closing the app and coming back later to open it and it now refreshing or are you leaving the app open and coming back later to browse?

I close the app come back the next day and only see posts from the previous days until I manually refresh.

This is indeed a minor inconvenience - and is one of our pending issue waiting to be fixed.
